Want to test @opentelemetry spans in Elixir?

Let's say you have a function like the one below - one span, some attributes.

#myelixirstatus

Next, configure your test environment, setting the exporter to undefined and minimizing the batch processor's delay.

Now we're ready to test!
We extract the span record from the opentelemetry dependency, and set the exporter to send the span to the test process.

Then we can assert we received the span from the :otel_exporter_pid, and can test that our attributes are set as expected.

Let's chat about my recent experience interviewing for a senior IC position.

My background: wearer of many hats with an observability slant. Looks to talk about processes and (devops) culture. Master of none. Been writing elixir for the last two years.

Getting interviews is surprisingly easy, though market sentiment doesn't make it seem like it should be.
Builders are still building.

Next step: hiring manager interviews. The good ones ask what you want to do, and pay attention to your background. Drop those who don't.

Coding interview, hot take:
I don't do leetcode anymore. There are much better signals one can get - from code walkthroughs, open source contributions, or some simple pair programming.

Generally, lots of companies didn't know what to do with my Elixir background.
