A thread on this: The #dronewars are increasing; why would Russia want Iranian drones? edition.cnn.com/2022/08/29/pol…
Russia supposedly sent a delegation to check out the drones recently. "Iran began showcasing the Shahed-191 and Shahed-129 drones, also known as UAVs or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, to Russia at Kashan Airfield" edition.cnn.com/2022/07/15/pol…
Israel's Defense Minister Gantz had mentioned this base last year; ynetnews.com/article/rkx2gb…
Iran has increased its drone abilities and improved some of its line of drones, such as the Mohajer 6. It has also exported drones to Venezuela, Ethiopia and established a drone factory in Tajikistan. This shows Iran's drones have improved from the past.
In the past Iran pioneered numerous types of drones going back to the 1980s, but not all of them work as well as Iran says. it also exported the technology to Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, as well as Gaza; to aid its proxies and militias.
Iran has used drones in Syria; it has threatened Israel with drones in 2018 from T-4 base and again from Iraq in May 2021; and from Iran itself; Hezbollah has threatened Israel's maritime waters and flown drones into Israeli airspace.
Iran has showcased drones more often at events, showing it can create a kind of "instant air force." Under sanctions Iran can't develop new warplanes, but it can build lots of drones; it used kamikaze drones against Saudi Arabia in 2019.
This is the context under which Russia met with Iran about drones. The deal could be part of a quid pro-quo related to Russia-Iran ties that are also related to the Iran deal talks.
Russia also could use Iran drones as decoys or as expendable air frames. Azerbaijan used some drones as decoys against Armenian forces in 2020. But Russia would also want the drones to be able to do surveillance and carry out strikes.
Russia could use the drones instead of wasting its own pilots because Moscow has been reticent to commit its air force to the fight in Ukraine. It could thus use drones to try to find HIMARs and other targets; because it can afford to lose the drones.
This shows the Iran-Russia alliance is growing. But it also shows that Russia didn't develop enough of its own drones. Drones are a weapon of the future and many countries like Israel, Turkey, the US, China know that drones are important.
I covered the global drone arms race and development of drones in my recent book Drone Wars; amazon.com/Drone-Wars-Pio…
It remains to be seen how Russia may use the drones, if it indeed acquired them; nytimes.com/2022/08/29/wor…
It is worth noting that Ukraine's Defense Express discussed the Mohajer 6 drone capabilities recently defence-ua.com/news/mohajer_6…

Iran Fars News has a huge 4,100 word article today interviewing the son of the pilot who is part of the grounded crew of the plane in Argentina. The article alleges a massive plot involving Israel, the US, and adds in antisemitic innuendo... Image
What's interesting, and I will detail this today in an article about it, is how they weave together everything from the AMIA bombing to Argentine politics...to Iran-Venezuela relations and the JCPOA all into this one affair...it's like the whole of Iran is linked to this plane
And you wonder as you read it...they doth protest too much; if it's "just a plane" and "nothing to see here" then why allege some huge plot that is designed to undermine the JCPOA, hijack Argentine politics...harm Venezuela-Iran ties etc etc...I mean it's just an innocent plane?

So wait...the US doesn't really care much about the deal; Iran doesn't care about the deal...basically only Russia wants the deal...and yet we are told every day "the deal could happen tomorrow...."
The Iran Deal talks remind me of the Iran "breakout" story...it's always "a few weeks from the bomb"...it's like it is always a few weeks from having enough enriched uranium for a bomb...AND we are always like a few days from a day...but these are "weeks" and "days" on Mercury
A day on Mercury is 58 days...so weeks on Mercury are like years here on Earth; days are like months...so we are always "months" from a deal and "years" from a Tehran bomb....that's the correct way to convert these times.

Remember those media articles that were basically PR about the Bayraktar drones, even claiming they somehow remade war (even though other countries used drones for years); now with Ethiopia using them, will there be front page stories?
My point is that somehow Ankara got all these major media in the US to “discover” drone warfare, even after the same media called it controversial when the US did it…and make drone strikes seem romantic and new…
Yet I have a feeling that it’s not so glorified when Ethiopia is alleged to do it…so which is it, are Ankara’s drones “re-making” war or just doing what Predators and Reapers and others did before, a bit cheaper though?

If they had to do a class on how not to design traffic this would be an exhibit...it routes a whole highway to a lane stuck at a light...and then merges to one lane after the light...back to a highway....it has zero logic.
First of all if you build a highway, in this case the new route 16...to merge up with the Begin highway in Jerusalem...why add a light...and second why have it merge to one lane after the light compounding the problem.
Literally days ago there was no light and people were merging fine, but then they opened the highway and so when they add tens of thousands of cars...instead of easing the congestion...they added a light...which makes it even worse...
