As an intern, emergency response called only when a patient had stopped breathing or lost cardiac output.

1990s the MET call invented in Sydney. Hospital-wide patient-centred system. #DFTB22

Difficult to show causality, but implementation effect on in-hospital mortality massive!

ILCOR now recommends Paed early warning scores (eg CEWT) and MET systems.

However, cost of HCWs being pulled away from usual jobs/role/activities.

Systems are flawed, aim for increased safety, thresholds lowered, more calls. Are they all required? Are there negative impacts?

MET criteria need to maximise signal to noise. Need a better system and better tools. #DFTB22

1. Big Data
Electronic records, AI algorithms, use more data points and variables.

One study could predict a MET call 18-hours ahead of time. Another study, 2-8 hours ahead of time.

2. Culture
Work at removing barriers to calling METs. Calls might increase.

All on the same team. #BeKind More early communication between groups. MET calls might plateau or decrease.
