Translating for one cancer patient is starting to be like a PT job. I have received multiple requests for support for other 🇺🇦 cancer patients and none of us know who to call. Support = needs beyond medical. In this case this mom has 3 kids. What if she needs surgery?
Everyone from the AKH medical community so far has been amazing, but the social services resources in Ukrainian/Russian for cancer patients do not exist. We do not know which charity to call to ask for help for better housing, childcare, translation, navigating Austria.
When I cannot sleep (often) I think about the families I worry for the most, why are those in the most dire straits, who have suffered the most, getting the short end of the stick? Why do families from Mariupol not get better housing or food? Why is a cancer mom in a bad dorm?
Why are people who arrived from relatively safe places in western Ukraine, were assigned entire apartments early on, not asked to consider going home to make space for those who really have no homes to go back to. Country of 40 million; we need as EU to start differentiating.
I understand there isn’t a bottomless pit of EU money so I am throwing out there concepts which have not yet been discussed. Ukraine’s economy also suffers more the less money is spent at home. I wish there was more focus on supporting Ukraine to help more IDP stay in Ukraine.
Because imho the mom of 3 from Kherson with stage IV cancer and the family whose 18yo son partially lost his eyesight after being hit in his Mariupol apartment with shrapnel would deserve prioritization, or the family who fled Kharkiv after months in a cellar, has nothing left…
…all three of these families have been told there is nothing for them other than the really by all measures minimal group housing they have received so far. Social worker? What’s that? The mom from Mariupol went to ACV yesterday. She was told there is no housing. None at all.
Final thought: the problem with bureaucratic solutions (Familienbeihilfe, Klimabonus, tons of pamphlets & phone numbers which tell you others to call) is the most educated, who arrived first, get help first.

We need 🚨 first aid (cash, social workers) for those arriving now.

Responsible organizations, administrators, institutions, STATE (!) must start actually doing their jobs. I am getting phone calls waaaayyy beyond my capacity as a volunteer. There is reportedly all sorts of bad stuff happening in locations where big budget NGOs are in charge.
When I can make a list of addresses (and I can), it is SYSTEMIC in nature. No oversight, vulnerable refugees forced to live by circumstances in group homes in which, as I was just told "criminals, alcoholics, all together". Refugees afraid to speak up = fear of being kicked out.
And over and over again I hear the same tune: such and such private person helped us, such and such volunteer really tried, but we need an official organisation to help, and they don't return our calls. This is not limited to any one geography or set of circumstances.

Housing is so bad right now that a woman who worked as a cancer surgeon in Ukraine writes me her Austrian hosts said she and her kid and her mom must move out on Sept 5 and responsible NGOs in both Wien & Lower Austria said they can’t help her.

This is a disgrace.
I have no phone numbers no ideas, I can only suggest one private contact who *might* have some advice. Lower Austria even closed its reception center at Arena Nova apparently (can’t house refugees who cannot show up how convenient).

It’s not just one guy. This mentality is pervasive across the far right who seem to be experiencing a renaissance of sorts thanks to never ending press coverage, inflation, refugees. I don’t want to hear any more nice smart people saying they’re “surprised” or “shocked”.
We have Kickl on TV, then the interior minister, then I don’t know how many far right candidates for President flinging money and signatures around, plus a far right still current regional politician charged with crimes against refugees (from 2008!) still in charge of refugees!
Who can be surprised? No one can be surprised. This has all happened on the watch of government after government and this too is very much Austria where Putin happily thinks he can soon manipulate another Orban should one emerge from the current jostling for influence.
