Draft Monroe County Legislature map is out. This is the first 5-Majority-Black district proposal in Monroe County history. The 5 districts cover "the Crescent," the most historically disenfranchised areas of the community. All 5 are over 50% Black Voting Age Population. 1 #ROC 
The map was drawn in accordance with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. All 5 districts pass the test to create protected districts. Map negotiated with Legislators, Roman, Yudelson, Brew, Pres. Lamar & me at table.

County Exec Adam Bello told caucus he'll only support May proposal, which has 2 Black districts instead of 5.

At a time in when minority voting rights are being suppressed by GOP in red states, it's incredibly distressing that Democrats would want to support a regressive map or no plan at all.

There’s been a lot of concern about neighborhoods. Keeping neighborhoods together isn’t in the Voting Rights Act, which supersedes state law. The Crescent doesn’t follow neighborhoods exactly. Communities of interest is also race, not just your block. #ROC
This is the best political compromise map on the table that also complies with the Voting Rights Act.

More redistricting: Majority-minority (i.e. aggregating races) is not a legal standard under federal law. Per Congress/SCOTUS, only one race may be deemed a majority in a single member district.
