1. The location matters. Manufacturing facility in Scranton PA is a direct message to blue collar base voters. This is a base election for GOP now. He’s not in the suburbs with soccer moms - he’s with blue collar men.
2. Biden will be making appearances in PA also. That’s a sign of confidence. Not often a first term Prez is out on the road in the mid-terms.
Both parties have laid their marker on FEAR. How scared is your base? Anger, yes…but anger is a function of fear.
3. Kevin McCarthy embraced Trump and is claiming the ‘raid’ on his home is a threat to democracy. Important to remember the base of both parties believe the other is a threat to democracy.
This speech was designed to convey a deep personal threat Biden presents to the listener
4. This was about cultural loss - almost no policy here. Even on the heels of a huge victory (Dobbs) there’s a clear sense among GOP voters that their world view is in decline.
McCarthy promises that’s not the case if you put him back in power as Speaker.
5. Crime is where they’ll make their stand. Border, democracy and street crime will be the oldies they drag out again.
Interesting because Biden will make a full frontal assault on this issue in a few minutes.
6. Bottom line is this has become a base turnout election for the GOP. Not fighting for college educated voters like in VA & NJ, they’re pleading to blue collar men to stay with them & hold the line.
Not the speech McCarthy wanted to give 65 days out but it’s all he’s got.

It’s hard to find an American who spent more time trying to reconcile the greatness of America with the evil origins of the American story than Frederick Douglass.
Frederick Douglass refused to allow Americans to ignore the complete story of her founding and her present.
He stood up, holding a mirror to the nation and refused to be ignored.
Douglass was perhaps our nations greatest patriot because of that.
Born a slave, escaped to freedom, risen to the heights of intellectual life, Douglass was an American, a Republican & an intellectual though never completely comfortable with any of them. He seemed untrusting of human institutions - for good reason.
The question of heroism is bubbling up and I think it’s timely to consider the question - What is a hero?
First, anyone can act heroically and they should be lauded for those acts. We are all both Sinner and Saint and we should be careful to judge both ourselves and others before slapping on the title ‘hero’.
In the traumatic times were enduring, it’s natural to seek out a hero - or heroes. Those individuals who at great cost stand against the forces of evil to ‘do the right thing’. We want them, need them - perhaps desperately in these times.
Each of these polls show measurable movement towards the Democrats - nearly all of it coming from Independent voters.
These are extraordinary shifts on a generic ballot test and it’s quite likely that at least some of the current intensity reflects the shock in the moment
As people who follow me know, I’m not as concerned with the ‘horse race’ of polls this many months out of the election.
That data is not worthless, but it really doesn’t tell me much.
55%, or about 19.6 million Latinos, of the United States Hispanic population identify as Catholic. 22% are Protestant, 16% being Evangelical Protestants, and the last major category places 18% as unaffiliated. pewresearch.org/religion/2014/…
A large majority (71%) of white Americans identify as Christian. Half (50%) are Protestant, including 23% who identify as evangelical and 27% who are mainline Protestant. Another 19% are Catholic, 2% are Mormon, & less than 1% each are Jehovah's Witnesses or Orthodox Christians.
Here’s a fascinating breakdown of US religions by age.
But let’s say you desperately want to believe it is so you consider ‘health care’ to be interpreted as ‘$35 insulin’. Even then look at who does and doesn’t care about it. 👇🏽
Democrats overwhelmingly cut ‘healthcare’ as a top issue. It’s like catnip to the Dem base. It’s the Holy Grail. It’s like ‘tax cuts’ to Republicans - they think it will cure everything else. Everyone else is like ‘sure I’ll take a tax cut if you’re giving them out’ same as HC
