I started my non-academic job a month ago, after successfully defending my dissertation. Here is what I learned about applying, and marketing myself, and what I recommend. @AcademicChatter #phdchat @AltacJobs @AltAcChats A 🧵:

1/
First, I found telling interviewers that if my PhD demonstrates anything - it is a definitive piece of evidence of my willingness and excitement to learn. Saying this seemed to display that I was up for any challenge, and I have proof I took on a challenge during the PhD.

2/
Second, the link between what your PhD signifies (your expertise, skills, experiences, research) and how you fit does not easily translate. Say things like "Critically examining information to present to all audiences" or "Creating easily digestible deliverables" like papers.
1/
The same thing does for presentation, conferences and other products you share professionally. You are demonstrating your ability to translate information for others to understand.

3/
Sharing the nuances of your research or your dissertation may come off as incompatible with the job. For instance, I shared my work about bureaucrats, rather than share I successfully completed a project from start to finish. Voila: project management.

4/
The inner-workings of a PhD are lost on any non-academics. They do not understand the work, the stress, the mental/emotional/physical tolls. What you can say is that you handle stress, prioritize tasks, and can work on long-term projects, or goals.

5/
And, the best resource to anyone looking for a job is someone else working in a similar field or role you are applying for. I will happily discuss my experience. I accepted a research manager role at a public opinion research firm.
Wow! I’m so glad it is helping people. Please DM me or email me with any questions or if you’d like to talk about your experiences glorianoble@ou.edu
This has come up in DM messages. I tested HORRIBLY on the GRE. I fortunately took courses with professors in my department and knew I was capable and would be successful. I believe the test further exacerbates any academic strides toward equity and do not demonstrate ability.
And lastly, the job market was incredibly discouraging. It was much harder for jobs to see my value, and hard for me to convey that value. So, if you are looking for jobs - please don’t give up!
