Prep to go...

Pets! Take your pets

If there's time take quick vids of all rooms in home. Open drawers/closets. Mention any upgrades. Do the outside of home, all sides. Don't forget sheds/garage take pics/vids there too. Outdoor patio stuff. #MillFire#Weed#Siskiyou#NorCal
Include a quick overview of whatever you have in your sheds or garages, 4 wheelers, patio furniture, BBQ grill, landscaping. Quick vid covering it all.
If car is in garage, back it out & turn it around so you're heading out. Know how to open garage door manually. [power goes out when poles/lines go down] So know how to open it yourself. Throw in "to go" gear.
Have your pets ready to go. ALWAYS put them in a carrier/crate if you have'm never carry. Even the most placid pet will bolt when they smell smoke. Take food, leash/halter, bed/bankie, comfort toy & their meds. #MillFire#Weed#Siskiyou#NorCal
If you don't have a crate, grab an old backpack, or pillow case if its a small dog or cat. Larger? DOUBLE leash. If they try to bolt, 1 grip may slip out of your hand. Best idea, load them in the car b4 garage door is opened.
Don't forget to have some cash on hand. Bad fires like this will burn thru poles and power lines quickly and since ATMs won't work if there's no power....
Plz check to see if anyone who works nights is aware of the current situation. In the case of an evac order wake them if need be! You might be saving a life.
Also check with your older/elderly neighbors to ensure they're aware of the new warning/order. Let them know they can ride with you since some surrender their license & will have no way to evacuate.
Be sure to check the air in your tires and that you have plenty of gas. You don't want a flat or run out of gas in a fire. Plan at least 2, if not 3 evacuation routes in case 1 or more is blocked or closed.
Last 2 important things...
Leave early, there's bound to be lots of traffic and you MUST stay ahead of the fire. Keep water with you & masks. If you run into a traffic jam smoke will get into your cars.
And lastly....
Let someone know where you are heading - the route you plan to take, notify if route changes and text them when you've arrived. Don't call...text. Calls drain batteries quickly.
For those who'll be told to evac soon, here's some help of what to take.

This is what'cha do in a fast moving fire. You grab whatever you can, load livestock in & get them out of there. THAT is the important thing...not how they're delivered to the evac location. #FairviewFire#Hemet
Whether it's chicks/ducks, sheep, calves to evac but all rescue groups are busy? If you have a pickup, van or even a car you can get them to safety this way... I swear! #Usewhatyouhave
But I can't say it's been a dull weekend. I pupper sat most of the day since the girls were at the state fair. Imagine my surprise when I got a text at 3 [something] a.m. asking if I could come help catch Holley. Errr...what? So off I went.
Show of hands - who's chased a dog who's chasing a opossum in the middle of the night? Especially since the opossum ran into the neighbors garage b/c he'd left the back door open? So now we have a barking dog, & a snarling, hissing opossum who's parked up on a cabinet. 🙄
And of course Holley is beside herself so she's running around knocking things over, she even crawled under the car to avoid being caught. In the midst of this the neighbor came out and said, what'cha doing? We explained, he saw the opossum said, oh ok, & went back to bed.

In the urgency of fires, there's a lot of pressure. You already know what you need. Documents, passports, vax cards, cash, clothes etc. But what really are the essentials to you. The things that matter most. #MillFire#Weed#Siskiyou#NorCal
I know it's overwhelming so close your eyes, clear your mind & ask what's really important. You'll be surprised what pops to mind.
