While we are talking about “seriousness” in the British political press, let me tell a story 🧵
I had been invited to a BBC political panel show a few years ago opposite a prominent right wing pundit…
1/4
The segment was pitched to be a back and forth between us, moderated by a host, who is a huge mainstream presenter.
The segment went very well (for me). All the lines I had anticipated would be used came up & it was one of those days were I was able to get all my lines in.

After we went off air, I saw something that shocked me.
The presenter reached across, grabbed right-wing pundit and apologised for the segment going against them. They then said the pundit would be brought back soon for another segment. All while I was still sat in studio.

It struck me that day that I was not supposed to have done well in that segment.
That a script had been written and we had strayed away from it.
There was no attempt to even feign impartiality.

Yesterday we got word that my dad had tested positive for #COVID19 and that he was being hospitalised in Tehran, Iran.
A country that had already been brought to its economic knees as a result of sanctions, now faces a global pandemic without access to basic drugs and equipment.
This crisis is without doubt unprecedented. It is unchartered territory. But none of that is an excuse for inaction.
From back home in the UK 🇬🇧, where I am (currently stranded) in the US 🇺🇸 and even in Iran 🇮🇷 ; progressive/humane political voices need to take charge 👇🏼👇🏼
1️⃣ Lift all sanctions that effect healthcare sectors.
2️⃣ Guarantee sick pay to all workers - paid upfront. No future tax credits and no exclusions to self-employed/zero hour contracts.
3️⃣ Emergency Universal Basic Income for all out of work, freelancers, shift workers etc.
