China's new ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, is about to give his first @PressClubAust address. There are *just a few* issues to cover in Australia-China relations so I'll tweet through them once he starts in about 10 minutes @ASPI_org
The ambassador has kicked off on a positive note, speaking of the hospitality and friendship he has received since starting in the role while flagging the growth in the trade relationship since diplomatic relations were established 50 years ago
He says the relationship has been 'caught in a difficult situation due to reasons known to all' (without spelling those out).

It's hard to overstate how big a deal this is for Australia's defence capabilities #AUKUS
Nuclear powered (not armed, as Biden was very keen to emphasise) submarines will give the navy the capability it was realistically always seeking
An 18 month consultation period is perhaps understandable after such a big decision but the key focus has to be getting new boats in the water asap. The mid-2030s projection for the first Attack-class was way too long #AUKUS

Essentially no change and four more weeks of lockdown. Sydneysiders will be going overseas before we're out

CHO says the effective reproduction number is 0.96, rounding up to 1 - so, very low. We've already been in lockdown for weeks and are about to be for weeks more yet the only further thing we can do is...play golf?
