The really annoying thing about this RoP diversity tempest is that the people raging about protecting Tolkien's legacy don't seem to understand that the central themes of his work don't depend on jot on the color of the various heroes skins, but on their class.
Betraying an artists vision means betraying their themes and intentions, not changing what's effectively the color of the wallpaper. LoTR is about power and responsibility and heroism. The elves could be fucking purple, and nothing changes.
I mean, do you want the work to be a universal myth that transcends its time and inspires new generations, or do you want it to be a museum piece reflecting the very limited life experiences of its original creators.
To a great degree, people complaining about diversity in their fantasy shows somehow ruining the show are like the people out there banning books. It's not enough you don't like it, fine, you're entitled to your opinion. But *you* need *other people* not to have it.
If you think there shouldn't be black hobbits for some reason, a month ago, there was not an LOTR show for you to watch. Now, there is not an LOTR show for you to watch. You've lost nothing. Other people gained something. Go about your fucking business.
So much of this is something I've written about before. Did you escape *into* science fiction and fantasy, or *through* science fiction and fantasy.
Not to downplay, but like the civil war threats, these folks have not thought about how Trumpistas are not geographically distributed for optimal rioting. I mean, seize control of your local suburban supermarket or the 7/11 in your small town, I guess.
They can convoy into major cities, of course, but they'll have shit supply lines, in unfamiliar geography, with no training. The local PD's will protect them as always, but the damage will be minimal.
It'll be the Troubles. Local acts of violence against local perceived enemies, a fistful of knock-off Rittenhouses.
There are a lot of people out here making cracks about people getting tuition relief for fancy liberal arts degrees who have never looked up how much it costs to get certified as a cosmetologist in Missouri.
Almost 25% of working teachers still carry student debt. Over 70% of nurses graduate owing student debt, and A 2019 survey by medical industry website Medscape found that 20% of nurses older than 55 still have student loans.
And don't get me started on accreditation inflation. Multiple studies estimate that over half, and some say 60% of current jobs will require post-secondary, education.
"Our merchants and masters complain much of the bad effects of high wages in raising the price [...] of goods. They say nothing concerning the bad effects of high profits. They are silent with regard to the pernicious effects of their own gains." Smith, WEALTH OF NATIONS
1. ) Diving into work, but I'd like to thank the WGA members gracious enough to endorse me on the candidate webpage -- which is really easy to set up, nice work by the election folks. elections.wga.org/2022/john-roge…
2) For those of you who'd like the short version and don't want to wade through the reasons for supporting these policies, along with other board members I think we should prioritize ...
