What makes a good topic for a #contentmarketing effort?

Here's a rough presentation I created years ago about turning topics into content buckets.

I don't think I've ever shared this with anyone.

Steal whatever you like.
I identified 3 possible content buckets a topic might fall into:

- SEO
- Sales and connections
- Brand awareness
Starting with SEO because that's the backbone of my content marketing program.

Ideally, everything we create should stand a chance of ranking high - even if it's low volume.

I would author and they would be frequent, when hot, reactive; or high effort big hitter pieces.
My key metrics for SEO success were:

- organic search traffic
- backlinks
- bounce rate
- conversions
Social media-specific campaigns were to expand brand awareness to people/brands/audiences outside of Mio.

Content would be created so we could tag people/brands.

This content would be lists, infographics, and podcasts.

Authored by the brand and one big effort per month.
Some examples of content imagery designed specifically to attract social media clicks.

s/o @HarrietRuscoe for the designs.
Success metrics for social media campaigns include:

# followers
# likes
# retweets
# impressions
# clicks
average engagement rate
best engagement rate
when sponsored (paid), cost per click
The final bucket could be called BOFU or product marketing (we didn't have a prod mktg team at the time).

This would be product content, be authored by tech folks, and be distributed via email, social, and IRL.
Success metrics could be split into two categories:

1/ Email:
# opens
% opens
# subscribers

2/ Sales effectiveness:
# leads
# qualified leads
But what about getting the topics from ideation to execution?
Before even making my editorial calendar, a topic must qualify for a content bucket.
This is then the first diagram I made as a content marketer, which helped me and other team members qualify whether it was a good topic for our blog.
Once it made it through this flow chart, it hit our @trello board and the content creation began.

When published, one of four things happened...
That was a nice trip down memory lane.

This presentation is around 5 years old.

If you want to charge more for your B2B blog posts, you need to make them more valuable.

Here are 10 things I expect to be included in a $1,000 blog post when I receive one as an editor.

(#6 is the most important)

Let's start with table stakes and progress to earn more 👇
1/ Spelling and grammar to the highest degree.

Use spell check, Hemingwayapp[.]com, @Grammarly, and read back your post on another device.

Read it out loud.

Do all these to spot mistakes so your editor doesn't have to.
2/ Structure

There should be a clear beginning, middle, and end.

- Intro to hook the reader
- Middle to address pain points
- Examples for social proof
- Conclusion and CTA

Autogrow quotes conversion rates of 86% 🤯

How?

Through the power of open loops 📈

By keeping the reader wanting more, you keep them hooked and scrolling until they convert.

Not familiar with open loops?

Let me tell you all about them...
An open loop is a copywriting technique where you open a dialog in your copy (blog post, sales page, whatever) but never quite complete it.

Sounds terrible?

It's not.

But only when you get it right...
By creating continuous intrigue, the reader always has a reason to stay on your page.

To keep scrolling.

To get to where you wish to lead them.

Interesting post by @BrianEDean on LinkedIn yesterday.

He's coined the term "bucket brigades" which are phrases like:

- Here’s the deal:
- Now:
- What’s the bottom line?
- You might be wondering:
- This is crazy:
- But here’s the kicker:

Why use these?
First off, I use these every day when I write.

Why?

Because it keeps people reading.

Especially when you use them as their own paragraph.

White space + bucket brigades are a copywriter's best friend.
Brian (king of tracking all things SEO) found that adding these bucket brigades to his content increased time-on-page by 25%.

40 components of high-performing blog posts

(A thread 🧵)
1 - A bespoke headline image

There's nothing that says lazy publication more than a re-used stock image.

Instead:

- find an authentic stock image
- hire a freelance designer
- use @canva to create your own
- use @TheMugshotBot to create link previews
@canva @TheMugshotBot 2 - An original title

Don't use automated tools; come up with several titles for your blog post and run with the best.

Think about what the reader wants from the article and how to get the attention of passive scrollers on social media.

If one doesn't work, change it!
