Today, I took delivery of @PeteUK7’s DIY air filter parts. I made a cup of tea and in 2 hours I’d constructed a highly effective air purifier at a cost of ~£160. An off the shelf comparator costs £400+

There is plenty of data out there re: the effectiveness of the #CorsiRosenthalBox. See: @CleanAirClassrm & others. Here it is at no.1 (the lowest fan speed). It’s very quiet.

I’ve done some calculations on what it would cost to get 1 of these into every school in #Somerset

There are 269 state-funded schools in #Somerset. At £160ea it would cost £43,040 to get just 1 unit into every school. An additional £82,240 if you wanted to include all EYFS settings (514 of them). BUT…

…1 per school is insufficient. 1 per classroom is likely required in order to ensure Covid cases don’t cause illness and school closures this winter. I estimate the average school has 10 classes. Some more, some less.

So in other words it’ll cost £430,400 to put 1 #CorsiRosenthalBox in every single classroom in #Somerset. Plus £82,240 for EYFS = grand total of £512,640 (in all likelihood this figure would be lower as the equipment would be bought in bulk)

Why should we be doing this? The case is quite compelling. Children are still largely unvaccinated, and… #longcovid. See this from the @bmj_latest last week👇🏻

I’m working with colleagues at @SomersetCouncil to explore the viability of a #CorsiRosenthalBox roll-out in #Somerset, but time and budgets are v tight. There is unlikely to be £500k sat around, & Children’s Services is already facing a £12m overspend. I will report back…
