Many thanks ⁦@LindseyReiser⁩ for hosting me, a discussing a few things at the start of the school year. First we still need to do more to protect our students, staff, and teachers.. Image
…for me, top priority is to improve our vaccination coverage. We now know boosting is the key in terms of hospitalization or not. Yet only 1/3 of adults in US are booster, only 8% under 18, and just 4% here in Texas. So the message is to boost now Image
Also only 1/3 kids 5-11 years are vaccinated vs Covid in US and only about 15% here on the US Gulf Coast. That’s simply unacceptable. Regarding masks for me that depends a lot on areas where community transmission still high, BA.5 wave coming down now but real slow..

Annual Covid booster? Possibly, but a few stars need to align first I think: 1) I would like to see what the human immune response looks like to our new bivalent booster just announced and released, 2) assuming that it induces immunity to BA.5, what… statnews.com/2022/09/06/whi…
…do you put into the design of next year’s booster? 3) what global surveillance mechanisms need to be implemented to identify emerging strains, 4) some clarity on the annual booster approach vs what we’re doing and other groups in terms of a universal coronavirus vaccine, 5)…
…5) these two strategies do not have to be mutually exclusive, but they do require some integration into a coherent framework, 6) and of course with that strategies for overcoming low public acceptance of annual boosters. I would likely take it because I’m curious and have a

Did the affordable, no-patent COVID vaccine Corbevax live up to its promise? : Goats and Soda : ⁦@NPR

@joepalca⁩ is amazing, thank you! npr.org/sections/goats…
Here’s the latest update on our patent-free vaccine:

70 million doses of Corbevax administered to adolescents in India 🇮🇳 in addition to 8.5 million adult boosters

In Indonesia 🇮🇩 a second related version known as Indovac, the first halal vaccine for Muslim majority countries
We did this for about $0.30 per dose in public and private funds. The White House at their vaccine summit told me that we broke all records by logs of public investment per doses delivered

1/5 Many thanks ⁦@EricaRHill⁩ for hosting me ⁦@CNNnewsroom⁩ about the new original lineage-BA.5 booster proposed by the FDA, which will be taken up by CDC ACIP later this week. A few things to discuss, but trigger warning: some nuance and uncertainty…
2/5 I feel it’s important that we receive another boost this fall, for those over the age of 50 - a third boost (5th Covid immunization overall, and adults <50 - a second boost. Doing so would ramp up virus neutralizing antibodies for the current BA.5 in circulation and help vs
3/5 vs a future variant that might come along as we head toward winter. The question is whether boosting with both lineages is warranted at this point? Ideally yes since BA.5 is going down but slowly and a long tail + possibility that any future variant might look more like BA.5

I will be speaking at this ⁦@theNASEM⁩ ⁦@theNASciences⁩ event coming this Thursday eventbrite.com/e/the-targetin…
I’ll explain how US biomedical scientists now under increasing attack from an axis + political ecosystem of 1) far right/FoxNews antivaccine/Covid origins conspiracy promoters, 2) the “disinformation dozen” + anti-GMO activists, 3) conservative podcasters/contrarian intellectuals
Some of this will be detailed in my forthcoming book (looking at Q1 2023) with @JHUPress @JohnsHopkins with the working title “Antiscience Kills”
