Many people cynically criticize the desire to build a better, more beautiful world as idealistic or overly romantic.

But fewer things could be more necessary than creating the kinds of walkable, dynamic, sustainable, & lovable places of our dreams.

As I argue in my latest piece, we can no longer tolerate the consequences of our destructive, dangerous, and profligate status quo of building.

We need to move beyond a world ruled by codes, theory, and ideological fiat, to one of tested practice, common sense, and humanity.
There's a notion that we can't build like we used to, or even if we could, that it's undesirable to do so. But these are myths.

The places we’re most attracted to perform better on just about every metric one can imagine compared to our car dependent world.
It makes little sense, then, to settle for travelling around the world, chasing a few days in these dreamy places, only to return to a bad status quo.

Would it not be better to experience the places we romanticize about, all the time, adjusted for context, culture, & traditions?
From sustainability, societal health, & economic vitality perspectives, this pursuit isn't idealistic. It’s common sense.

Building a better world isn’t outrageous. But maintaining one that guarantees worse outcomes, that people don’t even really like, at greater expense, is.
If we want a more sustainable, equitable, affordable, beautiful, diverse, healthy, and vibrant world, the only solution is to build as many "places of our dreams" as possible, such that the status quo is not only unacceptable, but cannot compete on price either.
This path towards realizing a better world requires us to bring just one with us: Optimism.

If we don't believe that building a better world is possible, we're doomed to a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if we believe a better world is possible, we can fight for it!
This isn't a blind optimism. The work towards realizing a better world will doubtless be hard & encounter much opposition. It might seem like every code, neighbor, & official is conspiring against us. Indeed, they might be.

But, we have common sense & desirability on our side!
This is a call to anyone reading this to seek to imbue beauty & joy into your own communities. Be bold. Be unafraid. But most importantly, go out & create the world of your dreams around you.

It's not only possible, but it's desperately needed.

Commuting via swim lanes will get all the headlines (rightfully so!), but what's more interesting to me is that this mode of city building is still being pursued. Highways & super tall skyscrapers dependent on tourism aren't a unique (or desirable) identity for tabula rasa places
To the extent Dubai works, it's because there was nothing truly like it before. It has solidified itself as the leading city in this "New York x LA x futurism on steroids" mode of building. But 5 Dubais aren't interesting, as they're devoid of identity & meaning
For what it's worth, I don't think Dubai works that well as a city, but it's wholly novel & unique. It demands some appreciation for its brazenness, despite its woeful environmental impact, anti-urban nature, ethically dubious construction practices & top down planning.

A country that privileges the rights of corporations & guns over women, children, and the common person can’t truly be called a democracy. It may well be representative, but who gets access to that representation?
Citizens United should be overturned, not Roe v. Wade.

Access to the most destructive weapons in society should be regulated, not widely accessible.

Our democracy should be the will of the people, not those few able to pay for their preferred policy.

This is common sense.
I’m exhausted by the inability/self interested nature of our elected representatives. They seem more concerned with vanity than enacting policy.

We’re impotent on the left & corrupted on the right. No binary system can effectively govern the will of 330 million people.

There's a certain indescribable magic about covered passages winding their way through buildings and cities. You might not know where they'll lead you, but you're pulled in by sheer gravity & attraction.

I'd love to see more of them built!
Scotland has a name for these treasures; Pends.

From Wikipedia, Pends, refer "to a passageway that passes through a building, often from a street through to a courtyard or 'back court', and may be for both vehicles and pedestrian access or exclusively pedestrians"
They provide a sense of intimacy & buffer as one moves between the public & private realms.

They're very common in Paris due to the city's vernacular Haussmann courtyard buildings. Instead of creating a new street or gated off private space, courtyard passages are quasi public.

In the 20th century, we destroyed our cities.

In the 21st century, we have to reimagine them as better than before. It's the only way to rectify the mistakes of the past.
If we're against what urban renewal stood for & the destruction it caused, we can't be satisfied with its remnants, our cities shells of what they used to be. We have to rebuild our cities better again to honor what was destroyed. We've done it before, and we can do it again!
It starts with tearing down the highways that destroyed our cities, but it doesn't end there. We have to rebuild the fabric these roads destroyed. To reconnect the communities severed by heavy hand of midcentury planning & institutional oppression

In the wake of yet another devastating tragedy, we can't become numb. My heart mourns for the families destroyed, & lives taken. We have to do something to stop this from happening.

In the name of common sense, humanity, & basic morality, it's time to enact strict gun control.
The solution isn't to militarize schools, pray it'll stop happening, or throw our hands up in futility as though we have no agency over this.

Every country who has enacted gun control or bans has seen a massive reduction in deaths & shooting events. We'd do well to end lobbying
This isn't an intractable problem, it's one other countries have dealt with and solved.

It's about priorities. This keeps happening over & over again because there are people who clutch to the idea of some antiquated fantasy instead of valuing human, & children's, lives today.

How do $2.8 billion, 179 acre projects like this get approved, but not simple apartments or mixed-use buildings?

Way out in Ronkonkoma, LI, Midway Crossing will have life science, convention center, retail & healthcare space. It’s meant to generate tourism. Who’s visiting this?!
Long Island is struggling through a crippling housing crisis, but there’s no housing in this plan next to a train station! It wants to be net zero, but there are thousands of parking spaces (EV charging doesn’t count). It’s supposed to generate $4.5B in economic impact, but how?
“Midway Crossing is exactly what we want to see—a transformative development that creates opportunities and jobs and makes Long Island a destination to work, live and play. Ronkonkoma, the airport, the train station and now this project make it the gateway to Long Island” What?!
