1/ @WKRG used a stock image of transdermal fentanyl for their Facebook posting of their report on the tragic death of 15 yo Adrianna Taylor & the arrest of a 17yo who alleged supplied her w/ the IMF that led to her death from illicit fentanyl poisoning.
m.facebook.com/story.php?stor…
2/ Illicitly manufactured fentanyl is driving the current overdose crisis - not strictly regulated pharmaceutical fentanyl which is used during anesthesia, pain, & as a transdermal patch for patients w/ severe chronic pain that's refractory to other treatment. @WKRG
3/ I recognize that this likely seems a small oversight. There is another less talked about opioid crisis: pain patients in crisis because they can’t access medication needed to function & have some quality of life. @WKRG
4/ Patients w/ chronic pain are dying too, from suicides or heart & strokes triggered by the physiologic effects of uncontrolled pain. Others die from OD, but it’s not usually their prescribed meds, but rather IMF, after they have resorted to illicit sources in desperation. @WKRG
5/ @WKRG, you’re probably wondering where stats on these deaths are, but no gov agency tracks this. I’m a former nurse, person w/ chronic pain, fellow Alabamian, & doing my best to capture as many deaths as possible, though I don’t have the same resources.
drive.google.com/file/d/1lFy_Rb…
6/ Here’s an annotated bibliography w/ pertinent references including stats on incidence of addiction (OUD), OD’s, and peer-reviewed articles discussing harms associated with involuntary tapering and abrupt discontinuation of prescribed opioids. @WKRG
drive.google.com/file/d/1U_ukDZ…
7/ Now to the real issue in this case.
15 yo Adrianna Taylor died tragically from illicit fentanyl poisoning. A 17 yo whose name isn't being released due juvy status facing adult charges for manslaughter & unlawful distribution of a controlled substance charges.
@MorganGodvin
8/ Though the details have yet to be released, I'm going out on a limb & guessing this was a case of friends / acquaintances that this was a case a of a sale b/t two friends/acquaintances vs how most ppl would picture "drug distribution."
9/ Is a stay in the over-crowded & much beleaguered ADOC going to help this young man or protect society? I don't think so.

@MorganGodvin served time following a similar incident & could provide valuable insight to @team_sheriff & @MobileDAoffice.

10/ @WKRG I am honored to be part of #ChangingTheNarrative, our members include include journalists, researchers, academics, & advocates with lived experience.

One issue of focus is the media’s portrayal of tragic cases like this.

So thanks to pain med shortages, I've had crazy high BP at times (think 180-200+/100+) even though mine is usually ~ 100/70.
I'm only 41, have really healthy cholesterol levels, and no atherosclerosis.
This is causing a-fib. At 1st, this was only happening if had to cut back to avoid running out, but now it's a daily thing. Rx'd beta blockers, but they aren't doing enough so now on blood thinners too (really NOT a good thing for someone that's constantly bumps in to stuff).
Ask anyone who has talked to me recently, I get out of breath talking even if I'm sitting down. Definitely not something that's ever happened to me (anyone will also tell you I have always been one that can talk up a blue streak, especially if I'm mad enough;).

@jnicky63 Oh yeah, you know our healthcare system has burned its moral compass when it alllows CHILDREN to suffer.
@jnicky63 I received an email last week from the mom of a child who has cerebral palsy, is non-verbal, has an intellectual disability, and a congenital heart defect (she can cry and make other sounds, but not speak) recounting her daughter's nightmarish surgical experience.
@jnicky63 The pre-op nurse stunned her when she said they are now giving less pain medication or may skip it entirely for some procedures because they have somehow decided these children don't perceive pain to extent neurotypical children & adults do.

1/ Thrilled that the Opioid Work Group's report, which expressed grave concerns re: the CDC's non yet public draft, was adopted by the Board of Scientific Counselors of @cdcgov's @CDCInjury

drive.google.com/file/d/1OHndXm…
2/ I was very much encouraged by the tone and text of this OWG report's vs the one issued by the OWG convened for the original Guideline. There really is no comparison.
3/ @speakingabtpain & @BethDarnall were both members of this second OWG. Over the past year the OWG met to critique the draft of the revised Guideline. The OWG then drafted their report (this the that report @DrChinazo presented today & BSC then voted to accept).

@lisaling

For the most part, I love your show, but there are some issues with the way that you cover the opioid crisis that I would like to bring to your attention
I’m proud to be part of #ChangingTheNarrative is an effort organized by @maisz, a journalist, @LeoBeletsky, an attorney, and @DrSarahWakeman, an addiction medicine physician.

The goal is bring attention to stigmatizing language in media coverage of both opioids and addiction.

I can’t remember who asked for this, but I found my pdf of the abstract w/ notes on it that you had wanted for:
“Assoc of Opioid Prescribing Patterns w/ Rx Opioid OD in Adolescents and Young Adults.”

Abstract w/ notes:
drive.google.com/file/d/1NfZAOq…

Study:
jamanetwork.com/journals/jamap…
This is from last year so not new but still good to bookmark.
Of 2,752,612 pts ages 12-21 who weren’t being treated for cancer & filed at least 1 opioid Rx from 7/1/2009 to 10/1/2017, there were:

-4,686,355 ins claims for opioid meds (aka prescriptions) ImageImage
-Of these 21,605,444 person-days, OD’s occurred on 255
person-days.
-249 patients experienced OD’s so a few individuals OD’d
more than once.
