I was exposed to TB as an 8th grader from an uncle in the literal HOLLERS of KY. I never imagined that I would ever have to face this in NY

For a healthy 13 yr old, who didn’t have symptoms, it was 18 mos of

-really harsh combination of antibiotics/ sulfa drugs (if your allergic to penicillin like me:harsher old school drugs)

-side effects that caused me to miss school; so my mom missed work (causing my single

mother even more financial stress & hardship)

-Monthly trips to the doctors to get blood work done because the meds put my liver & kidneys at risk-again causing my single mother already making 2/3rds of her male counterparts to have to take off work

-a full year & a half (7th & all of 8th grade) of my education interrupted
A year I ended up having to make up in the summer -not because I was stupid, but because I had to miss so much school

-permanent lung scarring & pulmonary damage that affect me today

Now, that was 37 yrs ago.

A lot has changed, I’m older, immunosuppressed & on medications that can turn a simple infection into a life threatening situation

So, to me, this sh*t is a big flipping deal.
