John Durham, the prosecutor appointed under the Trump administration to run a counter investigation to the Mueller probe, will complete a final report this year. His politicized inquiry is reportedly winding down.
Here’s what we uncovered about Durham’s work and why it matters.
Shortly after Robert Mueller wrapped up his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, AG Barr announced a new inquiry — one that would examine the origins of Mueller’s investigation and would be led by federal prosecutor John Durham. americanoversight.org/investigation/…
Our #FOIA litigation revealed that Barr met frequently with Durham— 18 times in the 7 months after the Mueller investigation ended — undermining the principle that federal prosecutors are supposed to be free from political interference. americanoversight.org/documents-we-o…
On March 25, 2019 — just a day after Barr submitted his letter summarizing the Mueller report to Congress — Durham met with Barr, Barr’s then-Chief of Staff Brian Rabbitt and two career officials. documentcloud.org/documents/6890…
In September 2019, Barr traveled to Italy with Durham to seek help in Durham’s investigation of the origins of the Russia probe. We obtained his expenses from this trip. americanoversight.org/document/doj-r…
We also obtained Barr’s letter appointing Durham to probe the origins of the Russia investigation.
Barr’s order directed Durham to review “activities involving the campaigns in the 2016...election & certain related matters.”
Barr’s letter to Durham was dated February 6, 2020. That’s more than 9 months after Durham was reported to have begun his investigation.
Our FOIA litigation revealed that the DOD and the Army deleted the text messages of top Trump admin. officials from Jan. 6, 2021.
After our revelation of the deleted texts, the Pentagon announced significant policy changes regarding recordkeeping. #FoiaFriday
The text messages were wiped AFTER we had submitted FOIA requests for them and specifically instructed the agencies to take steps to ensure that records were preserved. americanoversight.org/defense-depart…
Last month, we asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to open an investigation into the DOD’s failure to preserve the communications, which include those of former acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller and former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, from Jan. 6.
Leaders in Texas, Arizona, & other states have deployed law enforcement and military resources to try to counter unauthorized immigration at the border, efforts that are highly controversial.
In 2021, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott launched Operation Lone Star, an expensive operation allegedly intended to combat crimes like drug and human trafficking, that echoed nearly two decades of similar initiatives in the state.
By May 2021, Abbott had sent 500 members of the Texas National Guard and hundreds from the Texas Dept. of Public Safety to the border.
Arizona, Arkansas, South Dakota, Ohio, Nebraska, and Florida have all sent National Guard troops and/or law enforcement officers.
In 2019, whistleblowers warned about efforts inside the Trump White House to rush the transfer of highly sensitive U.S. nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia. We went to court to get answers. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
In April, we sued the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department for failing to release records related to the Trump administration’s controversial efforts to share nuclear technology with Saudi Arabia. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
Multiple government employees came forward as whistleblowers and raised concerns that the effort was driven by the personal interests of then President Trump and his associates and not the best interests of US foreign policy. oversight.house.gov/news/press-rel…
DOJ originally said it had no such record. We believed it was implausible that the Attorney General would empower a U.S. Attorney to conduct such a sensitive investigation without a formal order.
So we sued and pressed DOJ to conduct additional searches for an order granting Durham authority to investigate. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
The fake electoral certificates, which we obtained first, were a critical piece of the coordinated, multi-state effort to reverse the 2020 election and subvert the will of American voters.
The fake electoral certificates were assembled by Trump supporters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin who sought to replace valid presidential electors with bogus slates of pro-Trump electors. americanoversight.org/fake-electoral…
The documents show the names and signatures of the individuals who supported the effort to overturn the will of the people in their state. Most of the certificates contain no indication that they list illegitimate slates of electors not chosen by those states' voters.
We’ve obtained records that show how outside conservative groups funneled money into the Arizona Senate’s partisan “audit.”
Records we previously obtained, reported on by @gridnews, show the American Voting Rights Foundation helped fund the “audit.” grid.news/story/politics…
On July 28, 2021, Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer who had assisted with Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the election, wrote an email to AVRF treasurer Tom Datwyler, Cyber Ninjas CEO Doug Logan and “audit” spokesman Randy Pullen.
“Tom — Randy and Doug are sending invoices to wire $ to some AZ entities from American Voting Rights Foundation,” wrote Mitchell in an email we obtained. “Randy / Doug —… Can you please work with Tom to get the funds out today where the funds need to be sent?”
