Why write this book? Because on October 24, 2018 in #Louisville, KY, these 2 beautiful people—my sweet, elder cousin, Vickie Jones and Mr. Maurice Stallard—was stolen from their families & community by a man who decided they were the wrong color to be grocery shopping that day.
They are the genesis of my decision to write this book; to tell the stories of unrelenting pain and grief AND/ALSO how we make room for joy, love, peace, and healing by reckoning with it.
Why write this book?
Because there’s a too long list of names/hashtags (see: #buffaloshooting) that came before & after #Krogershooting. Which means that racial violence is still a reality for Black & Indigenous folks in this country & the “church” is complicit in that. I/we want off this ride.
Why write this book?
Because I’m clear that it’s entirely possible that YOUR name or MY name or HER name or HIS name or THEIR name could be, will be next. And the terror of that, the hypervigilance this creates in our bodies is unsustainable.
Thank you to everyone who has supported “Then They Came for Mine: Healing from the Trauma of Racial Violence” in this launch week. I can’t even begin to share how much your love and championing of this book means to me.
