Lan Wangji knew something was 𝘰𝘧𝘧 the first time he laid eyes on him—Wei Ying’s “brother”, Jiang Wanyin.
Maybe it was the look in Wei Ying’s eyes when Jiang Wanyin walked through the gates of the airport, dark with desire, a look Lan Wangji never saw directed to himself, even in the throes of passion. Wei Ying had jumped the railings and ran into the arms of the other, clinging on
like a koala, nearly toppling Jiang Wanyin’s suitcase onto the ground.
Lan Wanji pursed his lips as he watched the affectionate reunion between the two, moving backwards as he squeezed through the crowd in a more civilised manner towards the point where the railings end.
Wei Ying had returned to the ground by the time he looked back at time, pulling Jiang Wanyin’s luggage with one hand, the other wrapped around Jiang Wanyin’s waist. Lan Wangji's vision zoomed in and he narrowed his eyes.
Too close.
As the two walked towards Lan Wangji, he heard a bystander giggle and said, “Young lovers, how cute.”
Lan Wangji had to pull out all of his teachings to restrain himself from snapping at a stranger for even 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 such a thing. Wei Ying was 𝘩𝘪𝘴.
The smile on Wei Ying’s face was so genuine and 𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦 that Lan Wangji felt like an intruder. He hated to disappoint Wei Ying but when they nearly walked past him, as though he was nothing more than a backdrop, Lan Wangji called out, “Wei Ying.”
He saw the visible startle in Wei Ying’s reaction and felt choked. He had been by Wei Ying’s side the whole time, holding his hand and playing with his fingers as they waited for the plane to land and for Jiang Wanyin. Was he so unremarkable?
“Ahh—Lan Zhan!”
Wei Ying dropped his hand from Jiang Wanyin’s waist, which would have given Lan Wangji a sense of satisfaction if it wasn’t for the lingering caress Wei Ying left behind. If eyes could shoot lasers, Jiang Wanyin would be nothing but ashes with the way Lan Wangji was staring.
“A-Cheng, you must be tired, Lan Zhan will drive us home.”
Lan Wangji watched as Jiang Wanyin tilted his head, staring at Wei Ying with manipulative doe-eyes and asked, “Who is this?”
Even the sound of his voice sent chills down Lan Wangji’s spine. This person was not good, he came to the conclusion on the spot. He did not say anything, for his upbringing demanded it, but he resolved to keep this—this 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯 away from Wei Ying in the future.
“Didn’t I tell you?” Wei Ying replied with a laugh, his entire body falling all over Jiang Wanyin. Lan Wangji stiffened on the spot. “Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan—my boyfriend.”
Lan Wangji preened at the title. Take that!
“Oh, I didn’t know you got a boyfriend,” Jiang Wanyin pulled himself out of Wei Ying’s hold and while Lan Wangji internally celebrated at that, the crestfallen expression on Wei Ying’s face did not feel like a victory. “Let’s go.”
Jiang Wanyin walked ahead and Wei Ying hurried to chase, expression frantic as he pulled on the handle of the suitcase. Lan Wangji reached out a hand to help only to be brushed aside by an irritated Wei Ying.
-
Jiang Wanyin did not have much luggage to be a bother, much to Lan Wangji’s displeasure, as there was nothing he could nitpick on. The other only had one suitcase which fit into the boot of Lan Wangji’s car with ample space to spare. The whole walk to the carpark was awkward,
if Lan Wangji had to describe it. He walked behind the two conjoined figures like a brightly lit lightbulb when clearly, 𝘩𝘦 was not the third wheel in whatever this relationship was.
Wei Ying’s behaviour was odd, basically tripping over his own two feet to please and coax Jiang Wanyin over some 𝘧𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 he seemed to find with Wei Ying's relationship with Lan Wangji.
Why should 𝘑𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘞𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘪𝘯 have a say about who Wei Ying should or should not be dating?
Lan Wangji would have rolled his eyes if it was not so out of character for him to do so.
“Which hotel are you staying in?” he asked, anger boiling underneath his skin,
buckling his seatbelt after 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘸𝘬𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 between the three of them—this time, about whether Wei Ying should sit in the front by Lan Wangji’s side (as he very well should, in Lan Wangji’s honest opinion) or behind with Jiang Wanyin.
Jiang Wanyin won.
Now Lan Wangji felt like a taxi driver chauffeuring a pair of, heavens forbid, 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴.
“Hotel?” Jiang Wanyin asked with a frown, turning towards Wei Ying. “I thought I was staying with you?”
Stay with…Wei Ying? Lan Wangji’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he whipped around the headrest to look his boyfriend in the eye.
Wei Ying had been staying over at his house for months, barely returning to his own rented apartment which Lan Wangji had been trying to
convince him to give up since they were practically cohabiting already. It was a waste of money, which Wei Ying kept complaining he lacked.
“Of course you are, A-Cheng!” Wei Ying answered with a bright smile, cupping Jiang Wanyin’s face with his palms so that the other was looking directly at him. “Lan Zhan just forgot, okay? Don’t be angry.”
Lan Wangji did not forget.
In fact, he knew nothing about Jiang Wanyin’s visit until Wei Ying clambered over him in the wee hours of the morning, way too early for Wei Ying to even be awake and Lan Wangji inquired as to why he was up.
In fact, he did not even know about the existence of Jiang Wanyin. So imagine his shock when Wei Ying replied that he had to get ready to pick up his brother from the airport, to which Lan Wangji had eagerly offered to help, to get into the good graces of any of Wei Ying’s family
members.
This was not turning out how he imagined, however.
“You didn’t forget the address, right, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying asked, his eyes still never leaving Jiang Wanyin’s.
It was getting disgusting, the spell Jiang Wanyin had over Wei Ying, if Lan Wangji had to be honest.
“No,” he replied curtly. If he wasn’t gentle on the accelerator and caused Jiang Wanyin to jerk forward harshly into his seatbelt, who was going to blame him?
-
There was a thick layer of dust on every surface of Wei Ying’s one-bedroom apartment when they entered, due to the
lack of maintenance, seeing as Wei Ying was living where he should be—by Lan Wangji’s side.
“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Wanyin exclaimed through coughs.
“Ahh!! Sorry A-Cheng, I didn’t have time to clean up!”
The two brothers bickered as they wheeled Jiang Wanyin’s belongings into the small space. Wei Ying’s apartment was modest, with a small kitchen, dining and living area comfortable for a single person to live in. Lan Wangji frowned as he surveyed the area.
Wei Ying had told Jiang Wanyin that he would be living with him—in this space?
There was only one bedroom.
Lan Wangji took the opportunity when Jiang Wanyin closed the bedroom door in Wei Ying’s face, saying that he was being a nuisance, and pulled Wei Ying to his side.
“Ah? Lan Zhan?”
“You…” Lan Wangji tried to think of how to phrase it. You’re not staying here, was too rude. Will you be coming home with me, was too…needy. “Stay?
“Of course! A-Cheng’s here, where else would I be?” Wei Ying replied, clueless to the stone slamming down on Lan Wangji’s head.
There was only one bedroom.
To which he pointed out that fact stiltedly.
“A-Cheng and I slept together all the time, we’re used to it. It’ll just be like the good old days!” Wei Ying chuckled. Wei Ying turned in his arms and hugged him by the waist. Lan Wangji felt his mood improve just from that. “Jealous? You don’t have to be.”
Lan Wangji’s heart swelled from Wei Ying’s words. He trusted Wei Ying. He did, from the depths of his heart.
He did not, however, trust Jiang Wanyin.
“Mn.”
Wei Ying grinned up at him and tip-toed slightly. Lan Wangji waited for the kiss that he knew was to come when the bedroom door slammed open to the devil himself, Jiang Wanyin.
“—take a shower, you better have running water or I 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳—“
Wei Ying immediately pushed him away and ran towards Jiang Wanyin, as though being a distance away from him was torturous.
“I pay my bills! Stop slandering me!” Wei Ying whined, sticking close to the other as they covered the short distance to the bathroom.
Lan Wangji watched emotionlessly, his quota for expressions was seriously approaching its limit for the day and it wasn’t even lunchtime yet.
All the ups and downs made him tired.
Jiang Wanyin made Wei Ying clean the surfaces in the bathroom before making an agreeable huff, to which Lan Wangji nearly wrangled him for, because how dare he treat Wei Ying like a servant?!
Wei Ying dashed out of the bathroom and yelled over his shoulder, “Wait for me! I’m joining too!”
Jiang Wanyin held the edge of the bathroom door with a raise of his eyebrow. “Your boyfriend is standing right there,” he pointed out.
Lan Wangji had to be grudgingly grateful to him for remembering his existence.
“Oops!”
Wei Ying skidded to a halt, sliding on the dust and Lan Wangji reached out to stabilise him.
Wei Ying obediently stayed in his arms as Jiang Wanyin watched with sharp eyes before the door slammed close and the sound of running water flowed through the apartment.
Lan Wangji looked down at the swirl of hair on Wei Ying’s head when a thought came to him.
Wait, did that mean that Wei Ying would shower together with Jiang Wanyin if he wasn’t around?!
If Wei Ying could look at him right now, Lan Wangji was afraid that he would look as though he just ate a very, very sour prune.
-
Lan Wangji returned home aggrieved, having failed to convince Wei Ying to return home with him instead of squeezing in one bedroom with Jiang Wanyin.
One bedroom! One bed!
Lan Wangji trusted Wei Ying. But Jiang Wanyin? No. Not at all.
Lan Wangji did not trust anyone alone with Wei Ying, as he knew first hand the tempting appearance Wei Ying made in bed.
What if Jiang Wanyin laid his hands on Wei Ying?! Lan Wangji did not want to imagine.
Still, he followed Wei Ying’s instructions to pack a suitcase of his clothes and personal belongings for the duration of Jiang Wanyin’s stay. Anything for Wei Ying, regardless of his own feelings.
Home without Wei Ying was like life without colours.
Everything was dull and Lan Wangji felt numb. He ate lunch mechanically, and worked lifelessly until night fell.
He couldn’t sleep. Even as the hour passed his curfew, thoughts ran wild with images of the devil putting his claws all over his lovely Wei Ying.
First thing, Lan Wangji told himself. The first thing in the morning, he was going to save Wei Ying.

He isn’t alone.
Jiang Wanyin is on Wei Ying’s lap, his arms around Wei Ying’s neck, their faces too close to each other for LWJ’s liking. Wei Ying supports Jiang Wanyin by the waist, keeping him from falling.
