Over the past five days, heroes in dozens of cities across Iran have risked their lives to demand women's rights, human dignity, and freedom; at least 7 protesters were killed, 450 injured & 500 arrested; and @Amnesty has written 0 tweets on this. ➡️twitter.com/search?q=from%… #بیشرف
As seen in the link above, I'm referring to Amnesty International's main account: @amnesty. It's where the organization posts its priority issues. And @amnesty has written 0 on the Iran protests. All they did was retweet a post on Iran from their MENA account—dated September 16.
Let me be clear: I know there are many people connected to Amnesty International who care passionately for the heroic protesters in Iran, and who are doing amazing work. But if Amnesty's primary Twitter account is an indication, it seems that the leadership is burying the story.
Here's another metric: as the head of UN Watch, I've written 26 tweets on the Iran protests since Mahsa Amini was killed, and shared dozens more. The head of Amnesty International, Ms. Agnes Callamard, has done 2.

Today I was at the U.N. Human Rights Council, and here's a 🧵on what I saw.
First, UNHRC official Alena Douhan reported on her visits to Iran and Zimbabwe, and described both regimes as victims of vicious and illegal Western sanctions. /1
Just so you know who this UN “independent human rights expert” is, last year @AlenaDouhan accepted a $200,000 donation from 🇨🇳 China — when she also headlined a Beijing-sponsored online propaganda event under the banner “Xinjiang is a Wonderful Land.” /2
Well, I had enough listening to Douhan spouting Iranian regime propaganda, so I walked out of the UNHRC chamber. And then what do I see right outside? A massive Iranian regime photo exhibit about how they are victims of vicious Western sanctions—“unilateral coercive measures.” /3
Bravo: Mayor of Berlin @FranziskaGiffey pulls out of award ceremony for Navi Pillay, nixing the event. In July, as head of the UNHRC inquisition against Israel, Pillay defended her colleague's “Jewish lobby” rant—which 18 countries condemned as antisemitic.berliner-zeitung.de/mensch-metropo…
Here at the UN, when Pakistan FM Shah Mahmood goes on a CNN rant about those “with deep pockets who control media” & a week later sponsors this anti-Israel inquiry, we can't stop it. But democracies need not legitimize bigotry. Kudos to those who spoke out:
We counted country criticisms made by Michelle Bachelet during her term as UN high commissioner for human rights, which just ended. Turns out she rarely criticized tyrannies like Venezuela, China, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Cuba and the Taliban, but she condemned Israel a lot.
2/ Our chart counts country criticisms. But let's go beyond the numbers. For example, while she criticized Turkey 7 times, all concerned its actions in Syria. None addressed abuses within Turkey—such as arbitrary arrests, attacks on journalists, academics, human rights defenders.
3/ On Russia, 8 of Bachelet's 12 stand-alone statements concerned the war in Ukraine. Only 4 addressed abuses in Russia itself. Despite our many appeals, she made 0 statements on Russian political prisoners, saying nothing, for example, about jailed dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza.
Today as UNHRC opens, meet 🇶🇦 Qatar's new Ambassador, Hend Al-Muftah. She's the nominee to head the UN Forum on Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law. But 1 little problem: she's a rabid antisemite and anti-gay bigot. Exposed in new UN Watch report: unwatch.org/report-qatar-u…
2/ Qatar's UNHRC Ambassador @halmuftah: “The Jews focused their investments in industry and the media, and that is why they dominated, tyrannized and ruled the world.”
3/ Qatar's UNHRC Ambassador @halmuftah: “The American zionist controls the U.S. media,” and “thus it is well-targeted for achieving their anti-Islam everywhere!”
🇬🇧 Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022. RIP. On her 21st birthday, she addressed the Commonwealth and dedicated her life—“whether it be long or short”—to the service of others. She reigned for 70 years, a model to the world on how to serve one's people with grace, dignity & dedication.
April 21, 1947: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”
“But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your support will be unfailingly given. God help me to make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share in it.”
