I may have just sent an email to a professional DEI mailing list abt how in person & hybrid events are harming disabled ppl & had someone respond w “I’ve traveled & not got sick & also I’m an extrovert & we did one badly org online event so they suck & zero COVID not good”
Thank you ADHD & other psych issues re not keeping my mouth shut & #KnivesOutSpoonies bc I may have then sent a reply that “personal preferences do not trump the need for changing behavior so it doesn’t actively harm ppl. This is a DEI group. This is DEI 101.”
Scientists: anecdotes are not data

Also scientists: I traveled & didn’t get COVID so in person in a pandemic is ok actually
Oh good. Someone PM’d me w a passive aggressive message abt “are you saying we should do virtual only events to accommodate a very small minority of ppl”?

No. I’m saying you should do it to not help kill us
Maybe there really need to be some “purity” tests on who is in a DEI group…

Like do you think your preference to get beers w your friends at a conference trumps the rights of others to not die from the contagion you’ll help spread?

Do medical ppl have some sort of sentimental attachment to surgical masks?

Bc it’s 2.5 yrs into an airborne pandemic which surgical masks are not designed to protect ppl from & medical ppl in & out of office seem to avoid N95s more than the plague
This incl popular w patients folks on le bird site working on #LongCOVID

What gives?
& FTR ppl N95s are far more comfortable to breathe in than surgical masks

Surgical masks get constantly pulled against nostrils blocking air flow whereas N95 masks have a pocket of air around nose & mouth for comfortable breathing

Back when I was not public abt disability, I used to feel I wasn’t being brave enough watching other ppl be more open. If you’re feeling similar watching me now, pls know it took yrs & several other factors to get here. Disability discrimination is real. Pls be kind to yourself.
If it helps, some factors for me were: starting a job that paid more so I was finally able to pay off good chunk of past medical debt & start bldg savings; pandemic eroded my patience w nondisabled ppl; I became too mentally exhausted to mask my health issues well
I had a horrible exp w disability discrimination that led me to stance that I’d rather be discriminated against early on in employment process than later. So if companies were reading abt disability on my social media during recruitment & chose to discriminate, good riddance.

I think one big thing that nondisabled ppl have willfully resisted understanding for 2+ yrs now is how lack of COVID precautions in spaces disabled ppl are physically not present in still impact us. So staying home & online options are not the solution.

#KnivesOutSpoonies
COVID unsafe activities anywhere are an issue bc high COVID transmission still impacts those of us who are housebound. We still need to get medical care & interact w home health caregivers or family & that means we can still be exposed esp bc asymptomatic transmission exists.
Another way is how ppl who help us, like medical staff, getting COVID means our access to stuff we need to live is reduced thru issues such as staffing shortages at medical facilities. So even if we don’t get COVID we may not get necessary care for other conditions.

It’s 9 am & a medical place has already made me cry. I use a captioning app w text to speech for phone calls. Pharmacy hung up on me 3 times. Then told me they can’t work w me using my speech aid & I need to call back & use “regular voice”.
I said I can’t speak so then they gave me an email but given past experience, no one responds to emails like they do phone calls & I have questions which req back & forth. I use the app for most of my calls & no one’s ever been so rude never mind a pharmacy.
I’m just trying to get a prescription filled.

I was just thinking abt trying to keep hydrated yday & remembering how my last job was in a cleanroom so we couldn’t have food/drinks & many experiments were run solo & couldn’t be paused safely to go out for hrs which meant no food/water/bathroom & now I’m 😡 that this is norm
The only concession to health & safety was having a 12 hr time limit to be in the lab mostly bc when you’re that tired you make mistakes that can be v bad for v $$ & hard to replace equipment. Note that that wasn’t total time worked just in lab limit.
I def understand how difficult it is to write experiment procedures that can be paused bc I wrote procedures myself but the actual issue is staffing. Focusing on running solo shifts for efficiency means ppl can be stuck alone for hrs.
