A Moscow mommy chat is now discussing how to dodge the draft is simply not taking the paper into one’s hands enough is it worth jail time or better to leave now before draft papers can be served? The moms know laws mean nothing now. Five years ago it was all nannies & holidays.
No one believes state promise not to go after students etc. There is a real sense of panic as each family decides what to do. And let’s remember it’s only a tiny number of families who can afford to think about flying abroad and living there for months with no job or income.
Russians abroad share knowledge. Real estate connections in Turkey, Armenia. How to emigrate to Cyprus, Greece. Much of EU will be tricky as large numbers of Ukrainian refugees & inflation have already made real estate market very tight. Plus no provisions for Russians fleeing.
A Russian man age 30 married two kids 5 and 1 had done his military service was promoted then two university degrees now has his own business was called multiple times yesterday on his mobile by his local army recruiting office.
He is already in Morocco.
There are now Telegram groups for everything. One on which places in Moscow to avoid because they are handing out draft notices (subway stations etc) and one on all the border crossings and live info on how to get across and where. Unbelievable.
When men pass through border control at Russian airports, they are being asked a question about if they ever served in the military, but for the moment are still being allowed to fly out. I say for the moment because I imagine things can change quickly.
The Telegram stuff is incredible. Men are flying everywhere: India, Egypt, wherever they got a ticket to. At the moment border guards are asking questions but letting men through, however one guard admits even they don’t know what the orders will be for their next shift.
Not everyone is so lucky. There are messages as well from men not let out (Kazakh border crossing by car). They were out immediately on a bus to the draft office.
On the other channel about draft notices, there are photos and videos this morning from places around Moscow where police are stopping men at random on foot and by car and checking their documents. It’s calm; you almost wouldn’t notice it if you didn’t look closely.
Such a tough morning and I come back to lovely surprises: STAMPS! Thank you so much! I had literally run out. You guys are the best. Flowers were a gift from a Ukrainian artist after I bought a small painting this week from her.
And this! I really am so so thankful. Every time I think ugh this is hard something like this brightens my day and keeps me keep going.
I asked my Ukrainian Telegram chat (more than 1500 participants now) what they would tell Austria’s refugee coordinator, as I have been invited to meet him today. Their responses are of course miles better and more structured than my scribbled list of bullet points. 🧵
School is a big topic now: what Austria offers (mixed age class of 🇺🇦 kids learning German together) isn’t sufficient academically but is time consuming so kids have a hard time doing Ukraine online school too. Money for school supplies. Money for lunch and afternoon supervision.
Housing (lack thereof or rather restricted access?) remains a huge problem, many look for new housing now, stress over what happens with public transport after Sept 30. Without being able to work those on Grundversorgung cannot afford tickets.
Me: this morning I am going to the grocery store and running my own errands and the Ukrainians will have to wait until this afternoon.
The Ukrainians. Just this past hour.🧵:
"Hi we live in Drasenhofen but my son got a place at the polytechnic school in Mistelbach and it's two long bus rides to get there do you know anyone who can move us to social housing in Mistelbach?"
Give Pasha and Natasha's numbers and a Caritas Wien email address.
Phone rings. I hesitate, then answer. "Hi we live in Haidihof we wrote you on Saturday do you have a card for us yet, and a used phone for my dad, and a cane? What else do you have other than cards?"
Coming to Jesus talk re what Tanja can and cannot do. She is just one person.
A mom just wrote me that for some reason (trying to establish) her payments were taken away this month, she only received €145 for her daughter, who just started 1st grade and they cannot afford the list of school supplies. In theory there should be help for them. In practice…
This is Tirol! They told her there are no coupons. And the only help will be once she receives a document from the school that the child is actually attending. They took her payments away because mom got a job cleaning earning €200 with two kids 😢. So work = she now lost money.
She also has a kindergartner. Can we please send this poor woman some vouchers? She is doing everything right trying to work and is being punished by the insane system called Grundversorgung and the horrible folks who execute such decisions.
