This is your daily pension announcement. Details make all the difference in the gut pile of pension policy. So today I will focus on getting some random details out. God knows the GOA would not provide them. #AbLeg
First, I talked to some Toronto lawyers that have no direct connection to the @aimcoinvests negligence arbitration but were able to provide opinions more informed than my own. #AbLeg
Their collective opinion is that the GOA will try to delay, delay, and further delay the arbitration. Given the complexities of this situation and the staggering amount of money involved, a verdict may be possible well over a year from now. In other words, after the election.
That is a shame as justice delayed is (often) justice denied. Kicking the can down the road might seem like a good UCP strategy now, but I can guarantee ripping the band aid off now would be less traumatic. #AbLeg
Going back to Bob Dhillon being appointed to the @aimcoinvests Board. My concern is not his credentials or character. Rather, he has been a serial UCP appointee. Alberta Ingenuity, Economic Recovery Council......etc. #AbLeg #handsoffmypension
Which shows that his strongest asset is being aligned with the UCP. That isn't what the @aimcoinvests Board needs. It needs independent thought and skeptical inquiry. This presents the specter of casual influence towards the UCP agenda in the Board room.
This is why the current structure can't be trusted. The GOA has the minority of assets on deposit with @aimcoinvests and yet they keep acting like they have the majority. #AbLeg
If @aimcoinvests is found to have been grossly negligent through the whole VOLTS debacle I can guarantee that further litigation will be required to resolve remaining fiduciary issues. #AbLeg #handsoffmypension

Have a good day.

The Pension War Room™️brings you "the grift is strong with the UCP" edition. Everybody remembers Athana Mentzelopoulos, Deputy Minister of Treasury Board and Finance? She does live in Victoria and yet works for the GOA? she signed a two year extension to her employment contact.
This is a scam perpetrated by Travis. Her current contract expired in April, 2023. You know, when the election will occur. And Athana's employment likely will end, severance pay would not be payable. Travis should have let that play out. #AbLeg
Instead, the scam is to sign her up for a couple of years; so that now when she is fired she will be paid big severance dollars. All this from the "fiscally responsible". This is Travis trying to set a trap for the NDP if they win the next election. #AbLeg

Sorry, just had have this pension throwback from 2019. @ToewsforAlberta in his own words. He is keeping money THAT IS NOT THE PROVINCES with @aimcoinvests. You should really discuss that with the beneficial owners of said money. #AbLeg
edmontonjournal.com/opinion/column…
"AIMCo has earned its reputation as a world-class investment manager..." that was quite a statement. It was wrong at the time and it is even more wrong now that Kevin has been sent packing and AIMCO is in a hearing to determine negligence. #AbLeg
" it is estimated that this measure will result in an annual savings of $41 million..."

IT is estimated? Try AIMCO estimated. They did provide some estimates in a clear conflict of interest. The execs at AIMCo stood to gain millions in pay and bonuses just by having more assets.

This is your daily pension announcement. The Pension War Room™️is still waiting for the results of the @aimcoinvests arbitration hearing! @ToewsforAlberta does NOT want this out during the leadership campaign. #AbLeg
If you recall, this is some pension plans (not ATRF) alleging that AIMCo was negligent in losing billions of dollars via volatility options. These things are not done in open court but rather in top secret arbitration. #AbLeg
If there is a judgement against @aimcoinvests things will get spicy. The GOA, as sole owner of AIMCo, will be on the hook to pay the pension plans reparations with tax dollars. #AbLeg

This is your daily pension announcement. The Pension War Room™️takes another bath in the stench that is pension policy in AB. Bob Dhillon has been appointed to the @aimcoinvests Board with absolutely no input from pension clients!
aimco.ca/insights/board…
Pension plans that make up the vast majority of assets under management at AIMCO. I would submit he is marginally more qualified than the average oil and gas executive that historically is placed on the Board. Mr. Dhillon was a big financial supporter of PCAA candidates. #AbLeg
This is, of course, the crux of the issue. Forcing pension plans to use @aimcoinvests and then stocking its Board with the friends of the UCP is a problem for independent governance that plans require. (Mr. Dhillon was also appointed to the Economic Recovery Council). #AbLeg

This is your daily pension announcement. The Pension War Room™️abides! Apparently, the doctors are being offered a contract that includes a clause intended to prevent ripping up of future contracts!?? We go to Dr. Bob for our QOTD on the creation of @aimcoinvests: #AbLeg
This study looks at the creation of @aimcoinvests:
"The study also shows the major beneficiaries of the transformation appear to be the senior managers and particularly the senior executives of AIMCo, whose pay has increased significantly." #AbLeg
and....
"Unfortunately, there were no clear, public performance standards established for AIMCo as a whole and therefore no public assessment or debate of the success of the AIMCo corporatization project."

To be clear, Travis has done nothing here. #AbLeg

This is your daily pension reminder:
@jkenney said that public sector pension plans “are indemnified by the Crown”. Copping said “in the end it is the Alberta Government that holds the liability for the ATRF plan not the ATA”.

Neither one of these statements are true. #AbLeg
Public sector pensions are NOT indemnified by the crown. They are guaranteed by the assets that they have on deposit.

I wrote a letter to Travis asking him to show me this alleged indemnity in law. He replied without answering the question. #AbLeg
As for Jason Copping, he was just repeating what all the MLAs had been told to say. It is still wrong.

The legal entity that holds the liability for the plan is the trustee: @ATRFPension. Not the ATA. Copping's government appoints half of the ATRF Board. #AbLeg
