Looking forward to hearing @sarahRbakerDPH talk about the contribution of social & behavioural science to oral health #iadranz22#dental π¦·
Interdisciplinary approach is the key
Sense of coherence
Thinking about how people cope with stressors - affect, behaviours and cognitions
Important to understand that wicked problems may have no one single or best solution.
Itβs easy to work and research in our own silo - because itβs easy and comfortable.
But itβs not going to solve problems that cut across broad and complex systems.
Much of our evidence and interventions focus on the individual, less so on families, communities and populations.

We already know that health care workers experience higher rates of suicide and suicidal ideation than the general population.
1 in 6 reported thoughts of suicide in the past 12 months
Nearly 1/3 had ever had thoughts of suicide
5.6% reported they had previously attempted suicide.
Rates that are higher than the general population and recent @beyondblue study of Australian doctors.
Today @ADAVB lodged an application for protected industrial action to support public sector dentists in their enterprise bargaining. Their EBA expired in June, and we are still waiting for an offer from the government. #RespectPublicDentistry
Victorian public dentists are the lowest paid in Australia - by a long way. A dentist working in Victorian would have to work for 4 yrs to get to the starting salary of a new graduate in NSW, 5 yrs for a new graduate in Queensland, SA or WA & 6 yrs for the equivalent in Tasmania.
That's why we are seeing massive problems with recruitment & retention. There are 19% fewer dentists now than in 2018.
