Please encourage newcomers to #WesternU to consider voting in the upcoming #ldnont municipal election. Student turnout for these elections is historically low, yet students will be affected by many decisions to be made by the next local government. Also… westerngazette.ca/news/everythin…
If you wanna get informed about the election, check out accounts like @ThrivingLdnOnt & @london_votes. Watch online recordings of debates hosted by @ULLdn to find out how local candidates stack up on issues. There are good summaries available to make your research really simple!
Electing representatives who follow science and base decisions on evidence is an impactful #climateaction we can easily undertake. @CityofLdnOnt declared a climate emergency, but it’s up to the next municipal council to oversee implementation of the Climate Emergency Action Plan
If you are a 🇨🇦 student in London over the age of 18, you are eligible to vote in London IN ADDITION TO voting wherever you have another home address.
If you rent in London, make sure you’re registered on the Voter’s List. I would do this soon: london.ca/CheckTheList
You’ll need to find out which ward your home address is located in. Each ward has a representative city councillor that will be elected in October. Western’s campus is in ward 6; Fanshawe is ward 3. london.maps.arches.com/apps/MapSeries…
Generally all the info you need to participate in voting can be found here: london.ca/CheckTheList
There are details about where to vote, including on campus.
You can also cast your ballot in advance if you’re not available on Oct 24. Don’t leave it until the last minute!
One last thing— if you don’t plan to stick around in London after your degree, maybe you don’t care much about what happens. But there are a lot of vulnerable folks and other forms of life here (who can’t vote!) that will be affected by the decisions of local government. When you
cast your vote, consider those who don’t have a voice. Remember the underrepresented people throughout history who struggled and suffered just to have the right to vote for government that affects our daily lives. Think of voting as a profound, shared responsibility to society.

I am disappointed that this petition went nowhere after the federal 🇨🇦government made excuses and didn’t acknowledge the feasibility of reasonable actions we asked for. They claim there isn’t enough evidence to suggest balloon releases are a problem / warrant intervention…
If you are in Canada and want to release tens, hundreds, event thousands of plastic balloons into the sky for your enjoyment, the government response suggests the 🇨🇦 legal system will not stop you. This happens more often than we know - just search balloon release on Twitter
Instead, the government response petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/De… suggests it is up to other levels of government to address pollution associated with balloons. Yet, helium balloons released into the sky cross over municipal or provincial boundaries and produce litter across the country.
Remember the petition by @FLAPCanada urging the province of Ontario to update the Ontario Building Code to require bird friendly glass in new construction? @ChrisGloverMPP just introduced a motion in support to the Legislature! Please share and sign: chrisglovermpp.ca/protect_migrat…

A press conference will be held this Friday, October 8, 2021 at 10 a.m. with MPP Chris Glover, FLAP Canada's Executive Director Michael Mesure and Board members John Robert Carley and Albert Koehl at Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto City Hall.
