If they do not immediately leave, or seek an order of protection and/or pursue criminal prosecution, the survivor is accused of “failure to protect” her children from exposure to the violence that she is experiencing.
Survivors do not leave for many reasons including access to housing, childcare, income etc. They also simply may not want to leave or believe that leaving would put them in a less safe position (which data supports).
So, in this story, her children are removed and later, when she is in NEW RELATIONSHIP, with no allegations of abuse or neglect besides that she had previously been a survivor of violence, her newborn child is removed. Who is this system helping? These kids? Their parents? No one
