Murder-suicide on the Gold Coast 😔

Man murdered a woman & concealed the body before killing himself.

What ‘fun’ photo op will the PM choose to plaster the media with today, rather than address the real change needed?

Don’t @ me with your MRA shit😡

#DomesticViolence #auspol
3 murders in a week from family violence. Countless other people living in fear of death from partners, ex partners, parent etc
If only there was. ‘Prime Minister for women’ to tackle this issue and create change. Discuss with on the ground services about what is truly needed. Implement legislation change that is nationwide. Implement change within the police as to how they deal with DV

We are thrilled to announce the “Powered By Hope” financial grant for survivors of domestic violence.

Started in collaboration with .@mbhide , Powered by Hope originally started as a podcast series by Monica & Sayfty to provide people hope during the lockdown.
The short, uplifting episodes with personal stories of hope and gentle reminders helped many get through tough times last year.

Moving a step forward, we are now setting up a financial grant of $1000 (Rs 74,000) for #survivors of #domesticviolence in #India.
Many women in India find themselves in abusive relationships, unable to move out due to barriers, including financial dependence.

We hope the money from this unconditional grant will help two survivors in the best possible way.

These shootings are such uniquely American tragedies.

Especially when we have so clearly failed as a society to heed the warning signs.

There is no way to move forward without acknowledging that some people - like this man - are not safe to own guns. nytimes.com/2021/04/17/us/…
The question, of course, is:
* who is not safe?
* how does one identify who is safe?
* for how long are they unsafe?

We have some clues, already.
As @EmmyBetz and I have written with @BulletPtsProj there are a few clear warning signs, such as:
- current suicidal thoughts
- history of perpetrating #DomesticViolence

@DellAnnaLuca So you didn't research #UnemploymentDeaths from #COVID #LockDown

Mr "I make organizations antifragile • Principled management consultant • Complex systems #Researcher"

Got it

There's "throwaway" line in #TheBigShort

That was fact checked then & here

bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03…
@DellAnnaLuca Note that's for US based on pre mid 70s data & population

From which I've extrapolated figure of

Over 10,000 UK #LockDownDeaths

For EVERY %age point rise in unemployment

For EVERY year effects persist

Unemployment causes higher death rates - Yale

@DellAnnaLuca NB also that some "researchers" argue that unemployment saves lives

On basis that work related transport commuting consumer delivery leisure & travel accidents & air pollution fall & rise with economy

For the last decade+, I have been one of the vocal voices in our country calling to address #gunviolence as a #publichealth problem.

***Gun deaths are no different from #COVID19: when we politicize human suffering, we all lose.****

A thread: 🧵

#BoulderStrong
What does it mean to call it a "public health" problem?

1st and most importantly, it means centering our work in the human experience. The injuries, deaths, and ripple effects on communities. #ThisIsOurLane

nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
2nd, it means using data & science - not emotion or rhetoric - to create lasting change.

We did this for car crashes (without taking cars off the road.... we just made them safer).

We did this for AIDS. Evangelicals (e.g., Surgeon General Koop) were among the leaders.

@Ellie74327894 @JadeAeg 1. See

I perfectly "understand what women go through & our struggles"

I KNOW It's REALLY problematic for most of you to use male logic & reason instead of FEEEELLLZZZZ

While clearly you "never understand what MEN go through & OUR struggles"

Issue is a TINY minority of men...
@Ellie74327894 @JadeAeg 2. As I said

The issue is a TINY minority

Yes of men

As well as now most WOmen

Brought up to HATE by WOMEN

Boys are brought up to hate men & themselves as #ToxicMasculinity #EvilPatriarchy

BY THE #ToxicMATRIARCHY

And many of those boys no doubt end up hating women too...
@Ellie74327894 @JadeAeg 3. Is it any wonder so many boys but still a tiny minority are driven to rejecting themselves & wanting to become part of Gay community or even Trans one

Or that some grow up to kill women who hate them & spend lives in what seems to be sole motivation & focus of lives: misandry

Today seems like a good day to remind y'all of my & @drjessigold piece written 2 summers ago. The #atlantaspa shootings are not the fault of #mentalillness. There were clear, identifiable risk factors - most dramatically, hatred & addiction.

time.com/5645747/gun-vi…
More evidence out this week: it's not that serious mental illness *never* accompanies shootings - but rather, it's less common than substance use, misogyny, and other issues cambridge.org/core/journals/…
In fact, hatred of women & a history of #domesticviolence is the single strongest predictor. (And ps, most mass shootings in the US are related to family violence.)

As we talk about violence against women & #ReclaimTheStreets, let's also talk about migrant women, particularly those who are racialised. Here's a thread with some actions/events I'm personally aware of/my students have talked about: 🧵1/
The No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) condition attached to visas very directly impacts women seeking safety from domestic abuse. 4 out of 5 are turned away from refuges & many can't access support. Sign @JCWI_UK's petition to #scrapNRPF: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/5755… 2/

I once knew a woman who was married to a police officer. They separated, after years of mental abuse, she left with their young children, moving into rented accommodation. And he stalked her. She never knew until he told her.
He showed her exactly where he could stand without being seen, to look into her kitchen windows. He showed her where he could park to monitor who went into and out of her property. He was convinced she was having an affair. Which, of course, she wasn’t.

This was not a "tragic incident". This was a murder-suicide.

#Gunviolence is a public health emergency.

This woman - like so many female physicians before her- died as a result.

FULL STOP.
.@DellMedSchool @ClayDellMed I expect better. You teach your students they can identify & intervene on #publichealth risk.

You need to demonstrate the same leadership.

Let's start by identifying what killed her: a gun.
kvue.com/article/news/l…
Let's follow again by saying that YES most people who own guns are safe (just like most people who own cars are safe) - BUT there are clear risk factors that make people not safe to own.

The murderer was one of those.

**WARNING TRIGGERS** (I HAVE PERMISSION TO SHARE STORY)

Today was stressful & hard. It was emotional. I broke down in tears along side my volunteers & a young mother of two, who felt like her world was ending. She wanted to save her children from what she's had to endure.
She didn't want to end up a statistic. She chose to leave a volatile living situation & move to a safe place where she began the process of living for herself & living for her children.

She chose life not abuse. She chose her kids over her partner. She chose smiles over tears.
She told all of us that she had been planning for over a year to leave & was on the verge of leaving when #Covid19AB happened.

She was scared/afraid/had panic attacks not knowing how to help herself let alone her children. Then she saw us on @GlobalCalgary with @global_leslie.

Please share this far & wide! Both @ParachutesP & @HarvestHillsYYC are trying to raise funds to help humans & pets this Christmas & beyond.

The amount of people needing a helping hand especially since the start of the #COVID19AB & #COVID19 pandemic has risen as each day goes by.
Earlier this year we began planning this raffle in hopes of being able to garner enough success out of this raffle to sustain both organizations for a month or more.

But we need #Calgary’s #Help. We #need #Canada’s #Help. We need #Alberta’s #Help.
We can’t afford to lose another pet or lose another life to #DomesticViolence, #Mentalhealth, #Homelessness, or anything else for that matter.

#BBLStories #D4

It's 2008.

I'm in the Canine Unit and respond to a domestic dispute to cover another unit.

Circumstances are such that I leave my police dog in the SUV.

In hindsight, I wish I hadn't.
A man with a history of violent domestic abuse has broken into his ex-wife's house. He's got a warrant out for his arrest, and he's breaching his court conditions by being there.

He knows we're coming.

He's in the downstairs bedroom.

He's holding his five-month old baby.
One officer speaks with the frightened family while the other officer and I make contact with the man.

He's sitting on the bed cradling his child. He ignores us.

My eyes are on his body language and how he's holding the baby.

This is so, so dangerous.
