So much for #chessdrama

At @Perspecteeva we are calmly trying to avert the collapse of civilization. If that sounds more like your kind of scene, there's just *one week to go* to apply for the following jobs:

Director of Operations
Community Builder
Research Assistant

Short 🧵
First of all, a link to the relevant page on the website for those who want to get started. The deadline is the end of the day on October 3rd and we ask for a CV and letter in each case. We are also looking for new trustees and audio-visual consultants.

A few thoughts on the journey so far:

Perspectiva is an organisation trying to improve our understanding of the relationship between systems, souls, and society in theory and practice. I co-founded it in 2016 with Swedish entrepreneur and social theorist Tomas Bjorkman.
It's a difficult kind of organisation to place in an existing cultural category. We are not a think tank, because we do more than think and our target is not policy as such. We are scholars, artists, activists, and contemplatives - a collective of aspiring expert generalists.
If you'd like a longer rationale, you might like Tasting the Pickle: Ten Flavours of Meta-Crisis and the Appetite for a New Civilisation systems-souls-society.com/tasting-the-pi…
Or perhaps you'd prefer the more recent (7-part) essay series: Now that you've found the others what are you going to do?
whatisemerging.com/opinions/now-t…
The prior origins of Perspectiva lie in
Spiritualise (JR)
thersa.org/reports/spirit…
A New Agenda on Climate Change (JR)
thersa.org/reports/a-new-…
and The Market Myth (TB)
market-myth.com
The social origin was the perception of blindspots in our networks, particularly an unwillingness among social innovators to explore the spiritual dimensions of life as a matter of *public* concern. We seek to focus attention on the nature, meaning, and purpose of life as a whole
More precisely, we noticed lots of work on new economic thinking, political innovation, design for social good etc; and lots of new spiritual practices and retreat centres arising, but very little effort to bring these worlds together. We saw a kind of gap in the market.
I left a good job @theRSAorg to start @Perspecteeva. I received 6 months of funding from Tomas to articulate my purpose and attract funding. I succeeded in persuading JRCT & JJ Trust to support the venture and we started a few projects. But we were still more or less winging it.
We started several small initiatives and events, and invited like-minded people to help. Thanks for instance to @IAmPippaEvans @platospodcasts @simon_christmas @TomChatfield @dr_mcgilchrist @indraadnan @anthlawson1 @RonanHarrington @indy_johar @Lightkeeper @the_sky_above
There were relationships of various kinds with other small ventures too, including @alteregonetwork @AlterGlobal21 @Metamoderna and we were co-creators of @whatisemerging. We also had important connections to several legacy institutions, including @OpenSociety and @ClubOfRome
Just when I began to wonder if it would all work out, we met @FetzerInstitute. After a few transatlantic flights for long meetings, we began a serious partnership based on similar worldviews and aims. This partnership endures and is financially and strategically important to us.
Curious things happened. I was writing an essay on Bildung for @CUSP_uk when I met Nick Shaftesbury who lives in a particularly beautiful English Country House with a connection to Bildung, and, over time, this connection led to The Realisation Festival realisationfestival.com
We became a publisher. After a huge effort behind the scenes during Covid (Thanks @JMNSCH !) we succeeded in publishing 5 books. Because we'd done that, we were ready to catch The Matter with Things by Iain McGilchrist when it was suddenly up in the air.
systems-souls-society.com/insight/perspe…
And @Emerge, which we were a small part of initially, had grown socially but suddenly lacked management and direction. So after the gathering in Kyiv 2019, Perspectiva took it over. The project is now about "Convening a metamodern field of praxis" whatisemerging.com
Along the way, as well as several smaller grants, we also won funding from the Templeton Foundation for The Antidebate: systems-souls-society.com/praxis/antideb… which is a project I am particularly keen to use new capacity to get back up and running.
That's roughly where we are. There's existing work to manage and deliver on, but also new project plans including courses we need new capacity to start and maintain. We also plan to become less dependent on philanthropic funding and hope people joining can help with that.
So while we've advertised for three particular positions if you see yourself in Perspectiva in some capacity or know someone else who would, please get in touch. Again, all details are here: systems-souls-society.com/perspectiva-jo…

Three questions on #chessdrama are conflated and it helps to tease them apart.

1. Hans Neimann ever cheated at chess?

-Yes, he admitted to cheating twice in online chess, when he was 12 and 16 (he’s now 19)

Odds of cheating= c100%

(But does this make him “a cheater” today ?)
2. Has Neimann cheated “more and more recently” than he’s admitted?

- Carlsen believes so. Chess cheating expert Regan believes not.

There’s indicative computer evidence, Carlsen’s intuition, Chess.kom statement, Niemann silence, peer suspicion, but no ‘proof’.

Odds: c30%?
3. Did Neimann cheat in his victory against Carlsen at Sinquefield 2022?

Carlsen suspects so, based on body language, heightened(?) accuracy of play, and the prior context of 1 and 2 above. But no plausible mechanism to cheat, and motivated reasoning.

Odds of cheating: c3% ?

Q: Why don’t you want to play him?

A: He has cheated in the past and he might be cheating in the present.

Q: Which point is more important? Are you punishing him for past misdemeanours or do you have good reason to suspect he’s cheating now?

A: A bit of both.

#chessdrama
Q: So the reason you think he might be cheating now is because he’s cheated in the past?

A: Yes

Q: Once a cheater, always a cheater?

A: I didn’t say that.

Q: Can you prove that he’s cheated in over the board play more recently?

A: It’s difficult to prove. But I do suspect.
Q: Do you believe in the presumption of innocence?

A: Yes, but there is some indicative evidence here.

Q: Based on online games when he was 12 and 16?

A: Maybe more than that.

Q: Maybe?

A: I can’t say for sure.

131 days since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I've been following the war closely for personal and professional reasons. What is happening in Ukraine matters even more than many believe, and we're hosting a fundraiser on Thursday to clarify that case:
emergeukraine.com
As an international chess player, I faced opponents from the Soviet Union in 1990 just before it collapsed. I remember the red hammer and sickle flag near the board next to my Scottish saltire. In subsequent years I competed with Ukrainian and Russian players and befriended many.
One in-joke in the chess world concerns your participation in 'the B tournament'. In those years I played the B tournament sometimes, and I've had Ukrainian and Russian girlfriends. I also learned to speak some chess Russian to listen in on the analysis of prospective opponents.

Many speak of the present as an interregnum, as liminal, or simply a transition, but my preferred form of words comes from Zak Stein – *a time between worlds* - it gives the idea a poetic and mystical atmosphere for inquiry while also being an empirical claim. Thread 👇
This is the latter stages of a transformation of context that only occurs every 500 years or so. The meta-crisis is not ‘a lot of problems’ we may not solve, rather it is the character of this time between worlds, where one world system is dying but another has yet to be born.
Story disclosure, encounter and reckoning is where we need to start, not story creation. We may need *a new story* as many social change organisations suggest, but we can’t buy one off the shelf, nor brainstorm our way to one that works.

Just finished watching #DontLookUp
Impressive!
I wanted to share what I liked about it before I forget.
Thread 👇
The movie is about a massive comet hurtling towards earth and our failure, first of all to face up to it, due to denial, distraction and displacement, and secondly to deal with it, due to mistaken priorities, the wrong people in power, and failure of global cooperation.
It’s more like a metaphor than an analogy, but it should probably be understood to be about climate change, where similar dynamics are in play. This is tricky, because climate change is not a technical problem, but more like an adaptive challenge. So the problem is not the same.

“I had mixed feelings about metamodernism until I realised it is about mixed feelings.”

Of the 250 people at the @whatisemerging gathering this weekend, about a quarter said they were there due to interest in #metamodernism.

Here’s what that means 👇

systems-souls-society.com/metamodernism-…
“Metamodernism is a feeling, and all that constitutes the feeling and flows from it. When we consider the mystery of consciousness and the human drama playing out on this charming anomaly of a planet, feelings are far from trivial – they have cosmological significance…
…The metamodern feeling co-arises through the perception of our context writ large; it is aesthetic in nature, epistemic in function, historical in character, and it serves to call into question the purpose of the world as we find it, and the meaning of life as we know it.”
