Arrests in #HongKong this morning under colonial-era sedition laws, & @HonSocGraysInn hosting former #HK Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma this evening who spoke on “fearless advocates” & claimed that 47 lawmakers/activists will get a fair trial under the National Security Law.
In the Q&A (before I was ceremoniously told to shut up) I asked Geoffrey whether he agreed that the 47 deserved a jury trial, the right to bail, & that the press should be able to cover the trial. he declined to comment.
Geoffrey also stated that judges on NSL cases are not selected or handpicked by the Chief Executive John Lee. 🤦♂️
Is it any wonder that the HKSAR believes it can arrest & jail journalists, lawmakers, trade unionists, & children’s authors with impunity when the red carpet continues to be rolled out in London for senior members of #HK’s judiciary?
Just to add Geoffrey Ma used his lecture to talk about the civil rights movement in 🇺🇸 & the fearless advocates in the anti-apartheid movement in 🇿🇦 all the while saying nothing about the pro-democracy activists who languish behind bars in #HK.
In a room full of some of the most prominent 🇬🇧 judges & lawyers I was the only one who raised the state of the rule of law in #Hk & the NSL cases. Sums up the depressing state of affairs.
For those inquiring the event was hosted here: pnba.co.uk/event/the-2020… & was filmed. Will be interesting to see if the full lecture & Q&A is published online.
