Difficult thread to write this on - it might not be well received

Truss and Kwarteng doubling down overnight is to be expected. This is a cult, defined by their overwhelming belief in their world view. They are right, we are wrong. Check the comments by Minford and others
1/10
The real aim behind last week's budget was to create the conditions where they would have an excuse to cut the state and decimate public services. That is their core aim. See their book, 'Britannia unchained' Banker's bonuses was always a distraction. It worked
2/10 Image
So how have we reacted to this? Well a lot of people are taking the classic liberal democrat view and judging them by what we would call logic and common sense

But that is simply playing into their hands. It allows them to carry on calling it out as Remoaner angst

3/10
I genuinely don't think for example that they are at all concerned about whether their decisions make political sense in the medium term. Between now and the next GE they are convinced they can persuade colleagues and enough of the public to win a GE (despite the polls)
4/10
Measuring them by the normal standard of, will it make them electable next GE satisfies our curiosity but they don't think like that. They are displaying the traits of a cult, total belief in their world view and damn the torpedoes

5/10
Here's a bit of evidence as to why Truss won't move from her view that what they are doing is right
6/10

It's not as if we haven't seen it before. Trump did exactly the same. As I understand it Biden has not yet been unable to undo all the 'damage' Trump did to the USA with his executive decisions. Note 'damage' is our view, not Trumpers' view

And this is important here now

7/10
Truss is determined to radically reshape the UK. Indeed it is her mission. She knows there will be opposition but she and her backers have waited a long time for this moment. They are not going to give up easily

It seems enough Tory MPs atm are prepared to let it run
8/10
So my plea is for people to have a think before we make calls about how illogical this decision or that decision are. The only logic they are following is their determination that they are right, we are all wrong

It's a cult. It thinks like a cult
9/10
As a postscript can I say I want to be back in the world where logic, common sense, integrity and decency prevails, but we are faced with dealing with something very different

Not only does it act like a cult it also shows all the signs of being a coup in plain sight
10/10
So, what to do about it

First don't stop calling it out - you have to stay true to your values

Second if you have a Tory MP let them know your feelings, calmly and clinically

Third support those groups such as @RebootGb who are working hard to get reform on the agenda
Some people saying that they can't see tweet 6/10. I've no idea why you can't see it. It may have something to do with the embedded tweet

Bit of a thread about the NHS.

People in the UK have since 1948 been able to get care free at the point of need. Originally most of that care was provided by Govt managed and funded providers of service. GPs were slightly outside that as 'independent practioners'
Over time service delivery has largely remained with NHS run and managed providers. That changed markedly this century. More and more services have been contracted out to the private sector. Often support services but more and more it's full frontline service provision
Alongside the NHS there has been a relatively small private hospital provision serving a small market of those wishing to pay direct or via insurance policies. The medical care would mainly come from consultants working over and above their NHS contract

Let's think about The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

This bill epitomises a very clear distinction between how Tory minds work and how for the want of a better phrase, 'liberal democratic' minds work.

The distinction can be summarised as Exclusion v Inclusion

1/
The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill (PCSC) brings in a range of new measures. You don't have to look far to see that the dominant theme is, you can't do this and you can't do that. No noisy protests near Parliament (kudos to Steve Bray), no damaging statues etc

2/2
The new Trespass legislation will follow a similar pattern. You want be allowed to do this and you won't be allowed to do that.

It's all classic knee jerk Tory reaction to things they decide they don't like. Exclude, exclude, exclude.

It's about time we understood some basics about the NHS. Short thread

The biggest cost in the NHS is staffing - somewhere between 70-80% depending on which organisation you're looking at.
If you privatise parts of it then the only way a private organisation can make profit is to cut costs (or raise prices). That by definition will mean looking at the main cost area, staffing.

You can cut costs in two ways, cut numbers of staff or change their terms and conditions
Presently the easiest way to do that is by cutting the number of staff. Sometimes work can be undertaken more efficiently by machine or computer but nobody has yet made a robot for physiotherapy

So, to cut costs by losing staff usually means stopping doing something

Been thinking overnight re Cummings.

Strategically there are a few issues.

If PM gets his way this time then backbenchers are disabled for a long time. 35+ realise this.

Challenging Johnson becomes a real problem for them at a time when some are questioning his ability.
Allowing Cummings a platform on Monday has opened up a range of issues about the role in UK of SpAds. Giving him oxygen has fundamentally shifted that role, set a precedent for the future.

That is exactly what Cummings wants, to change how Govt works. Remember Javid.
The cabinet has been totally undermined imo. Being frog marched out to defend the PMs employee is demeaning and they have compromised their position. Johnson and Cummings have them by the short and curlies now. They have to be obedient (despite what they might think)
