Great piece in the @starphoenix by Nick Pearce on labor shortage in #Saskatchewan. This applies across North America. All the factors Nick mentioned are correct, and I’d like to add one more: leadership attitude, a 🧵 thestarphoenix.com/business/help-…
I don’t know what you call it, but I see it in opinions like
- “Young workers don’t work as hard as I did.”
- “I did my time, so should they.”
- “I’m not going to let them use my expensive [insert time-saving tool of choice here], until they learn to do it the hard way!”
We see it in how leaders frame the problem.
- “High school should do a better job promoting trades.”
- “The colleges don’t do a good job recruiting students, and the courses don’t meet our needs.”
...
- “Getting to work on time every day [in spite of X,Y,Z personal challenges caused by family or societal breakdown] is her/his problem.”
It’s also obvious in how we look at the paper/digital divide.
...If we don’t want digital tools in our shops, mines, and construction sites, how are we going to attract (nevermind use the contribution of) workers who have never seen a fax machine, probably don’t remember blackberry, and learn most of what they know on YouTube?
Finally, there’s how we look at the competition for workers from beyond the immediate area.
- Are we matching the packages that pay workers from door-to-door? Or are we still just irritated when a great person leaves for $5/hr more and LOA?
...
- Are we recruiting for personality, values, and aptitude and then providing training? Or are we still recruiting the unicorn “great personality, under 25 with 10yrs experience and 3 tickets”?
...
- Do we accept the job market is global; we need to pay more to keep the talent close? Or are we rejecting higher pay because we don’t want to “inflate the local market”?
On my way out after a weekend and three games in Toronto.
Some thoughts on this.
1 - its an oddessy to get to the ballpark in Toronto. Suspect this is the same in many cities. @UPexpress is great express from the west, but limited express options from north and east. 1/
2 - travelling downtown by car/taxi/Uber is pointless. Limited parking, terrible traffic, poor traffic management. Again, same with most cities.
3 - nearby stay impossible. $600 /night at nearby hotels, & @Airbnb just flushed 100’s bookings cbc.ca/amp/1.6533868 2/
3 - the walk from Union Station is ok, but it’s a hike. Someone in @rwesthead’s comments mentioned this is tough for seniors, those with mobility issues. I saw it. Dozens and dozens struggling to get to/from the station before and after the game.
