This is putting even more pressure on an already exhausted teaching service dealing with the complexities of the contemporary classroom…./5
This is totally inadequate given the unprecedented increase we are seeing in the number of students with mental health needs…/6
It has been almost 20 years since it was recommended that the school counsellor to student ratio should not exceed 1:500…/7
In 2018 the NSW Government accepted a similar finding by a Parliamentary inquiry, yet there has been no plan and no timetable to reach the 1:500 benchmark…/8
In recognition of the skills and expertise of school counsellors, the Gallop inquiry called for senior psychologists education to be remuneration at deputy principal level and further called for school counsellor pay to be aligned with that of head teachers…/9
Instead of addressing the caseloads and salaries of school counsellors the premier is delivering them a real wage cut that will fail to attract or retain the additional school counsellors we need.
