Spurs fan re 1981
“I’ll never forget my brothers coming back from that match in 81 & saying how horrific it was. There should NEVER have been another semi there. Not that they care that much about fans now, but they really didn’t give a shit in the 80’s.”
“I stood in the middle pen watching MUFC in the 88/89 seasons and it was absolutely packed, had to climb out because more n more people were being funnelled in,horrendous experience.”
Fulham fans re 1975:.
"Feet never touched the ground"
"Scared to celebrate the goal in case we went down"
"It was absolutely rammed in there. Scary at times"
"The most packed in I've ever experienced"
Sheff Utd Fan re Nov 1989
“I was at that game in Nov 89. Sheff Utd fans crammed into the “cheese slice” corner next to Leppings Lane. Crush so bad I was lifted off the ground when we scored. /1

Shouting at police eventually got some fans moved into north stand. Police had learned nothing”
“17th Jan 1984 Sheffield Wed v Liverpool I stood in the central pen. It was a fight to get in and the most uncomfortable I've ever felt. Very frightening.”
“I was behind that goal in 88 and I had never experienced anything like it following Liverpool home and away at that time. I put it down to saving my life as I went up the side of the stand in 89”
LFC fan re 1988
“My dad was there in 88 & 89-he was 1 of the fans that wrote 2 the FA in 88 2 complain about the issues fans had faced; the FA chose 2 ignore & continue to use that ground. /1
/2 They have never face accountability for their disgraceful decision to continue to host national games there.”
LFC fan re 1988
“I was there in 88 & my friend & I had to climb out of the middle pen into a side pen as we saw side pens were empty. When we went in 89 I was adamant we would not be standing. Got tickets for the North Stand.

We still got caught up in the crush outside.Put it in my report.”
“I went to the 88 semi as a 13yr old. It was frightening. Blokes around me trying their best to not crush me against the barrier. Pushed me under it so my back was against it.”
“I was in [Pen] 3 for the 88 semi and it was absolutely chocker in there. Went round the side (pen 1 I think) a year later because how bad it was in the centre pens”
LFC fan re 1986
“was in there back in 86 towards the end of the 85/86 season. The middle pens were becoming overcrowded and I remember people climbing over into the adjacent ones with more space.

/2 Again no obvious monitoring of the numbers going in and just expecting it to work itself out”
LFC fan re 1988
“I was in pen 3 in 1988 and experienced crushing like no other before on a terrace. It was fate - and the correct procedures followed by the authorities that day - that there was no disaster then.

I was there again in 1989 but through a series of events was in pen 2. #LFC#JFT97”
As a Coventry fan on the leppings lane end at our 87 quarter final v Wednesday, we were also penned in and crushed that day. I recall the same thing weeks before in the league game. There but for the grace of god….
“I was in Leppings Lane with a mate in ‘88. Spent the whole match standing on the partition between sections hanging on to the railings. I sat in the stands in ‘89 luckily.”
Hillsborough stadium had a long history of overcrowding incidents causing crush injuries, including numerous reported problems at the 1988 semi-final
The fans in 1989 weren’t even the first people to die from crush injuries on the Leppings Lane terraces
Here is the history….
In 1988, there were numerous complaints from fans about overcrowding at the Leppings Lane, but serious injuries were avoided because the veteran police match commander recognised the danger & took action to relieve overcrowding…by closing the access tunnel to the terraces
In 1981, 38 Spurs fans were injured from a crush at the semi final against Wolves, some with broken limbs
First, the match commander. He was new in the role & inexperienced with football command, but refused help/ handover support from his highly experienced predecessor.
That wasn’t immense pressure - it was immense arrogance & negligence
His ego was more important than fan safety
Then the planning. SYP don’t seem to have been able to do basic maths, & didn’t work out that the 7 turnstiles they allocated would never cope with 10,100 fans & a dangerous crowd build up was inevitable
Again, that was immense incompetence & not a decision made under pressure
I’ve been asked a few questions about the CCTV tapes stolen from Hillsborough stadium on the evening of the disaster, so thought I would do a thread on it
This is the crime report for the theft from 21/4/89
Note the double underlining of the “NO PUBLICITY” instruction
The tapes were stolen from the Sheff Wednesday club control room (rather than the separate SYP police control room).
The tapes were stolen from a locked cupboard, in a locked room, with an alarm that was set.
There was no sign of any damage or a forced entry
The club CCTV technician made a statement about his experience on the day & the theft of the tapes
This line appears to have disappeared from the final version which was loaded onto the police computer system, HOLMES:
"I locked the room and set the alarm and left the ground"
There are so many things wrong with this rant by J Goldberg QC but I just wanted to look at one particular falsehood in this...the assertion that there were ‘good’ fans who arrived early and died, and ‘bad’ fans who arrived late at the back and killed them
42 of those who died had been stuck in the crowd outside & entered Hillsborough stadium in the emergency Gate C openings at 2.42 and 2.50.
These in Goldberg’s book would have been ‘bad’ late fans
So if you are going to blame the fans for Hillsborough, you can’t distinguish between fans who lived and fans who died...you have to blame *all*fans including those who died
He should at least have the courage to do that, rather than using that snide good fan/ bad fan argument
