In teaching the transatlantic slave system, I want to share a few individual stories that can be used in the classroom. The first is Belinda Sutton, an enslaved woman taken from the Gold Coast (today’s Ghana) around 1724

In a petition for reparations from 1783, Sutton describes her childhood, her enslavement and transport across the Atlantic, and her experiences in the Americas.

I like to use her brief description of the Middle Passage in comparison with other enslaved Africans’ description of the crossing. Image
You can read more about Belinda’s Sutton’s life

A few thoughts about media and the horrors in Palestine 🧵
I spent many years teaching about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and it was always a challenge helping high school students make sense of what they see on the front page of newspapers or on TV. /1
Too often the mainstream media oversimplifies the conflict into platitudes about "eternal hatred" or "self-defense" and the media fails to provide a deeper understanding of the historical roots of the conflict over the last century. /2
I've definitely noticed some terrible headlines still, but I've also been impressed by some of the more nuanced articles, especially these two by Hagai El-Ad @HagaiElAd and Shadi Hamid. @shadihamid /3
