Modest beginnings. St Peter-on-the-Wall was founded circa 654 and was built over the ruined gate of the abandoned 3rd-century Roman fort of Othona reusing Roman stones and bricks in its construction. It is literally 'on the wall' of the Roman Fort. #Essex
The building was used as barn for a time after the dissolution of the monasteries. The different stone work where a large barn door can be seen on the side. The church originally had an apse and simple buttresses.

The Shingle Street shell line was started by friends Lida Kindersley & Els Bottema, who were both diagnosed with cancer within months of each other in 2015. As they underwent treatment, they extended the line. Both are now cancer free & repair the line every 6 months. #Suffolk
