Update: Mexican gov just issued a statement about the latest #Pegasus finds.

They seem rattled.

Notably, no denial. 1/

Statement (gob.mx/sedena/prensa/…)
2/ They do however make use of the Pegasus Prayer.

They seem to be hovering near Step #2 👇("And if it did, it was legal.")
3/ Responding to evidence that reporters & a human rights defender were hacked with #Pegasus...

...Mexico highlights its struggles w/criminal groups.

But this is a different issue: the *abuse* of security powers to go after illegitimate targets.

I can't think of a field of knowledge not presently struggling with waves of misinformation & disinformation.
Even in fields like astrophysics, crackpots & cooks are constantly pumping disnfo, trying to go viral.

Like the *discredited crank* who tricked people into concluding that @NASAWebb disproved the Big Bang (false!).

Friend, none of us are experts in everything.

It's hard to have the confidence to call BS & ignore.

Fortunately scientific disinformation usually follows familiar patterns...

So... I was part of a sting against a group of private spies targeting whistleblowers.

Wild story in this thread👇
Powerful people regularly hire private spies to suppress inconvenient facts & avoid scrutiny or prosecution.

Some are ex cops, others ex spooks. Some just mercenary amateurs.

It's a scourge... in desperate need of scrutiny by lawmakers & prosecutors.
Sometimes the private spying operations are bumbling.

But even when they mess up, they help to chill accountability & truth telling.

The message is clear: if you come forwards with an inconvenient truth against a powerful person, you may get targeted.

Stop and watch this video.

Whatever you thought about the governors' stunt... it turns out it was worse.
DeSantis sent a videographer because he was trying to make an audition tape for the presidency.

Well, we've gotten a pretty good look.

Let's make sure this never happens.
Update: DeSantis escalated.

It's not going to stop.

There's a good chance that you're safer because of Peter Eckersley or things he got started.

He had a vision of how to make the web saver & more private with ubiquitous encryption (HTTPS Everywhere!) & quietly worked towards it.

This is a tragedy.
The utter unfairness when the good die much, much too young.

Talented people who choose to use their gifts & vision to work for the benefit of us all are treasures.

We just lost one.
Peter did so much. From building tools that made browsing private & more secure, to working on AI & ethics... and asking hard future-looking questions.

The part that makes me so mad is that he had so much *more* to give.
