“I’m so sorry!” Wei Ying bowed deeply as he stepped through the doors.
Lan-laoshi held his finger up to his lips in a motion towards A-Yuan wrapped in a warm cardigan slumbering away on a makeshift cushion pillow.
“I’m so, so sorry, Lan-laoshi—” he apologized again, this time in a hushed whisper.
The other rose from behind the desk and met Wei Ying half way. “It happens. Do not worry about it,” he reassured Wei Ying.
Wei Ying couldn’t help but feel the telltale signs of a blush creeping up from his neck and he internally shook himself to get it together.
Not only was he late *again*, but he made Lan-laoshi have to stay back to watch A-Yuan.
He felt like a complete trainwreck all over again. And to think that he was *blushing* at the saint that should really be wringing him out for being a bad parent.
“Let me give you a ride home,” he said suddenly, breaking Wei Ying out of his thoughts.
“Oh heavens—no, please don’t worry about it. I’ve taken up enough of your time already and—you probably didn’t even get to have dinner. It’s fine! I can take A-Yuan home myself,” he blubbered in embarrassment.
“I insist,” he responded with a sense of finality that left Wei Ying paralyzed.
The man slid on his bag and scooped A-Yuan into his arms before Wei Ying snapped out of it. A-Yuan didn’t even stir at all the jostling and Wei Ying tried his best not to read too much into it.
“Could you help me turn off the lights?” Lan-laoshi said in a low, even voice.
Wei Ying nodded eagerly and grabbed A-Yuan’s backpack as well.
Lan-laoshi guided him to the parkade with only a singular car left—a sleek, white car looking equal parts sporty and practical.
“You can get in the back,” he said in the same tone, “I don’t want to wake him.”
Wei Ying did as he was instructed and noticed how much the car smelt like Lan-laoshi. He chastised himself for even *thinking* of the man’s scent.
Lan-laoshi gave Wei Ying a moment to get situated, before depositing A-Yuan into his arms, the child immediately buried his face into his father’s neck and sighed comfortably into it.
The drive back to Wei Ying’s apartment was definitely quicker and more convenient than trying to carry a sleeping three year old in the dark, not that Wei Ying hadn’t done that on a previous occasion.
Lan-laoshi had taken A-Yuan out of his arms again, citing that he’d have to unlock the door and prepare A-Yuan’s bed so they didn’t wake him.
Wei Ying reluctantly complied, knowing that the reasoning was sound and it wasn’t like he was afraid of letting the alpha into his home.
Lan-laoshi was far to put together and clearly out of his league for him to even begin thinking the man would be interested in an unmated omega with child.
That was too much baggage for him to even unpack on a good day.
Wei Ying counted his lucky stars as he opened the door to the apartment, remembering that he did get to do laundry over the weekend, meaning instead of clothes strewn all over the place, it was instead now sitting in the dryer waiting for him to never unload and fold.
He led Lan-laoshi to A-Yuan’s room and fidgeted awkwardly as he watched the man place his son in bed. There was a silly fuzzy feeling in his chest as he watched the sight before him.
It was too domestic and everything he could possibly want but not have.
Wei Ying jumped when Lan-laoshi came up to him, disrupting his dazed state and ushered him out of the room, closing the door behind him.
“I’m sorry again for imposing on your time—I’m sure you have other things you need to do—can I, maybe make you a late dinner?
"I think I have a few things in the fridge I can whip up,” Wei Ying briskly made his way to the kitchen.
Wei Ying felt a slide of a large hand down his arm and catching at his wrist that stopped him in his tracks.
“Please don’t worry about it, Wei-xiansheng.”
Wei Ying tried to ignore how large Lan-laoshi’s hand felt around his wrist through the loose zip-up hoodie he had thrown on this morning that felt much too warm to be wearing at this very moment.
“But I should repay you somehow!
"This is beyond a favor you’ve done for me, not to mention it happened last week too,” Wei Ying chewed on his bottom lip.
The project at the software development firm he worked as a coder was entering crunch time—
—and his boss was breathing down everyone’s neck to make sure they met the deadline. The last person that clocked out on time was fired the next day and Wei Ying couldn’t risk losing his job.
When he finally managed to put A-Yuan in daycare he was able to get back two—
—maybe three hours of sleep on a good day and he didn’t want to jeopardize that with the daycare with his continued tardiness in picking his son up.
“If that’s the case…”
Lan-laoshi stepped into Wei Ying’s space without letting go of his wrist and he had to steel himself from backing away, “...I would like you to call me Lan Zhan outside of the daycare.”
Lan Zhan took a polite step back, releasing Wei Ying’s hand and offered a soft expression.
Wei Ying only realized then that his heart was beating heavily in his ears and his body felt hot all over, urging him to reach back out for the contact.
He cleared his throat, feeling the ghost of a lump built up, “Lan-laosh—”
“Lan Zhan,” said man corrected.
“Lan…Zhan,” Wei Ying tried the name, letting the syllables roll off his tongue, “is that all?”
There was some tiny part of Wei Ying that wanted that not to be it—for Lan Zhan to ask for something else, something more—but he tamped down that selfish desire quickly.
Lan Zhan nodded in confirmation and gave Wei Ying a fond look.
“Then,” he wanted to slap himself for opening his mouth, “would you be okay with calling me…Wei Ying?”

“Shhhh! Be quiet!” Wei Ying pressed his little finger against his lips.
He looked over at the smaller boy with pretty gold eyes and smiled.
“You are the one talking,” he retorts.
“Aiyo, is that how you speak to someone who you want to take you to see the bunnies?” Wei Ying teased back.
The young prince frowned at his point and looked away definitely.
“That’s what I thought,” he grinned and peeked out of the bush he had shoved them into.
The royal guards turned down another path soon enough and Wei Ying let another minute pass before standing up and reaching his hand to help up the prince. He stared intently at Wei Ying’s hand before taking hold of it and hoisting himself upright.
Wei Ying had yet to get so close to *the* Lan Wangji without suffering the consequences of his icy gaze.
But with him passed out drunk after a single sip of Emperor’s Smile, he was granted the time to observe him to his content.
It wasn’t anything weird!
He just had a hard time figuring out how one person could look so beautiful. If there was truly such a thing as perfection, Wei Ying was sure it would be Lan Wangji.
Not a single brow was out of place.
Every curve and contour sculpted with care as though someone had crafted him by hand with all the care in the world.
His lips looked so soft and the perfect shade of pink.
Wei Ying couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like to kiss him.
Wei Ying peered into the library carefully, trying to make himself as scarce as possible.
He wasn’t *avoiding* anyone—he hadn’t done anything wrong—not this time at least.
—okay, so *maybe* he had snuck in some Emperor’s Smile *again* and maybe this time he *did* have too much and maybe he *might* have accidentally let slip a confession to his bestest best friend and is absolutely mortified it even happened.
He dinged his faulty memory to not have forgotten about his own confession of all things *while* drunk.
If there was anyone he couldn’t lie to, it was Lan Zhan.

“W–wait—” Bunxian helplessly tried to grab onto something to steady himself.
“Wei Ying’s fault,” Bunji growled and canted his hips roughly against Bunxian’s rump.
His thumb was pressed firmly above his tail on a spot to the side of his tailbone, causing Bunxian to arch his back beautifully for Bunji and pour out mouthfuls of squeals.
Bunxian’s slick was all over his legs and staining his pants further, his dick dribbling on the inside of his robes that Bunji hadn’t even bothered with.
He had been innocently chatting with several of their peers when the door behind him nearly flew off its hinges.

He had just wanted to take a glimpse into the future—to see what the outcome would be—if he was making the right choice—
But he had bitten off more than he could chew.
Wei Ying landed on cold stone—too smooth and too glossy, for where he had been previously. His head was throbbing and he reached out a hand to grab at anything to stabilize himself.
Whatever he managed to get a hold of turned out to be not entirely sturdy and tipped onto him.
He felt what seemed to be hard spined tomes falling on him and the clattering of a half dozen other things. One struck him in the back of his neck and he collapsed into a heap on the floor.

The soft melody echoed over the quiet waters Lan Zhan peered out upon.
The Gusu branch of Marine Protection had been alerted of a pirate company headed in their direction.
Lan Zhan wasn’t sure at first, but after hearing the same song the fourth night in a row patrolling these waters, he had a fairly good idea of what the pirates were after.
Mermaid scales, their hair, flesh, and most importantly, their pearls, were highly valued on the black market. Rumor has it that one could retire immediately if they were able to procure any part of one to sell off—provided they were intelligent enough to never get caught.
