At 9.55am today (7 October) officers reported seeing a man armed with a knife in the secure car park of Ascot Drive Police Station, off Ascot Drive in #Derby.
Armed officers were sent to the scene and at 10.03am where a police firearm was discharged.
The man, whose identity is unknown, sustained a gunshot injury and East Midlands Ambulance Service were requested to attend.
Officers administered first aid until paramedics attended the scene, and he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Enquiries are ongoing to identify the deceased and his next of kin.
No officers, staff or other members of the public were injured during the incident.
A cordon is currently in place and Ascot Drive is closed and will remain so for some time while enquiries are ongoing.
A number of local businesses that are located within the cordon have taken the decision to close – and shoppers were asked to leave by those stores.
There have been no evacuations of any businesses or homes.
As is standard procedure in such situations Derbyshire Constabulary’s Professional Standard’s Department has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Despite posts yesterday highlighting issues of people still visiting the #PeakDistrict despite government guidance, the message is still not getting through. @DerPolDroneUnit have been out at beauty spots across the county, and this footage was captured at #CurbarEdge last night.
Cars were parked in both the car park and on the hill up to it. A bags of stones that was at the entrance as a roadblock had been pulled to the side to allow cars to enter. Plenty of people were walking, many of which had parked up in cars before heading out for their walk.
Some number plates were coming back to keepers in #Sheffield, so we know that people are travelling to visit these areas. Daily exercise should be taken locally to your home. Under government guidance all travel is limited to essential travel only.

What a lovely day! The perfect day to drive up into the #PeakDistrict for a walk, bike ride, climb or horse ride, isn’t it?

No, actually it isn’t.
We’re seeing a lot of confusion over whether people are allowed to travel to the Peaks to undertake daily exercise while the government are asking us to stay at home. While we have this fantastic space in our county, right now is not the time to be using it.
Daily exercise should be taken locally to your home. Under government guidance all travel is limited to essential travel only. This is to help ensure that our emergency services aren’t put under even more pressure during this time.
