When do NRIs move to India? They have, what I call a "tipping point". Elaborated in my book (Back Home):
1. Organic tipping point 2. Event-based tipping point 3. Deadline-based tipping point
1. Organic tipping point
You think about it, and think about it, and keep thinking, researching, visiting India. It piles up on you, and you finally conclude-- enough :) Let's go
2. Event-based tipping point
This is when NRIs have Visa rejections or family-related issues where they have to return. Not much choice here
3. Deadline-based tipping point
This is rarer but I've seen folks do this. They decide, say, "Next birthday I should be in India" and work towards it.

3 Things (amongst many) I could have done differently as an NRI
1. Upgraded my car 2. Made fewer acquaintances 3. My bank is not a current account
1. Upgraded Car
Don't fall for the desi guidance of 'keep your car for 100k miles to get max value out of it' . I had a honda civic & hated driving. Wish I had upgraded earlier.
I got a V6 Accord very late and ended up moving to India in 6 months of enjoying that car :)
2. Made fewer acquaintances
Many single NRIs make friends with a lot of people to fill time. You spread yourself thin. Be more choosy with who you spend time.
