To be clear, BMI is nothing more than a tool of oppression. How?

1. It separates people into different groups using arbitrary and totally inaccurate numbers and then attributes certain false characteristics to each group (healthy/unhealthy, at risk/not at risk)
2. It is DELIBERATELY biased against marginalised groups such as Black & other non white European folks. And disabled folks. (This has nothing to do with bone density or fat so please stop using that as an excuse)
3. It is used to gatekeep medical procedures/treatments/surgeries from those who are often the most vulnerable and in need. It has created a 2 tier medical system.

4. It is used to STEAL FROM (statistically poorer) folks by unfairly increasing their insurance premiums.
5. It is used to deny folks the right to have a family who are unable to conceive naturally. This includes those with subfertility, LGBTQIA+ folks and disabled folks.
6. It is used to make false claims about risk of disease based on CORRELATION without adjusting for important factors (ironically including the fact that BMI is a tool of oppression and impacts health in a number of ways)
7. Its inaccuracy is now being used as an excuse to perpetrate medical weight stigma on fat folks in new and clever ways (eg. The lie that BMI limits are unfairly preventing individuals from accessing WLS or WL drugs)
8. Its inaccuracy is often attributed to the fact that it does not effectively differentiate between fat and muscle. Which further stigmatises fat folks who aren't muscular and elevates "athletes" who are being "unfairly mislabeled". This is nonsense and needs to stop.
9. It was first described by a eugencist who was invested in furthering the "superior" (read yt) race. It was co-opted by a well known fatphobe. Its use as an individual assessment has always gone against the advice of numerous experts.
10. It is the ONLY way we diagnose the so-called medical condition "ob*sity". Even though it is known to be completely inaccurate, it is used to classify people as having a chronic condition when in actually fact they are simply fat.

More lies doctors tell their patients (a 🧵)

1. "Being fat is preventing you from falling pregnant". No it is not. If you're struggling to fall pregnant, it has nothing to do with your weight. Nor will losing weight improve your chances of getting pregnant.
2. "We cannot provide fertility treatment until you lose weight". LIES. They CHOOSE not to do it. Why? Because "success" is measured, and success is mainly determined by clinician competence and they don't know how to treat fat folks. Failing makes them look bad. It's that simple
3. "I cannot prescribe this medication unless you lose weight". There are a handful of medications that are ineffective in people with higher weights. In those cases, an alternative should be provided. Otherwise its all about risk Vs benefit and its up to the patient to decide

Some lies that doctors tell their patients (a 🧵)

1. "If you lose weight, your symptoms will disappear." There is no evidence to support this beyond a few months and also, you're a doctor not a pyshcic. You can't predict the future so you can't make statements like that.
2. "We can't treat you until you lose weight". Denying someone treatment unless they perform a task that is unsuccessful in up to 98% of people is unethical and breaches our code of conduct. It's not that they CAN'T treat you. It's that they DON'T WANT TO.
3. "Your [insert symptom here] is caused by your weight". We're very good at blaming weight for pretty much everything in medicine, but the fact is that there is essentially NO evidence that being fat CAUSES any symptoms. All we have is associations. Weak ones, in fact.

When you call me lazy, ignorant, dangerous, or unworthy of my medical licence... when you tell me to "do some exercise" or wish me "good luck" with my diabetes... when you refuse to hear the evidence or listen to reason and attack my character instead... you don't hurt me.
You hurt every single fat person in your life. Because statistically speaking 1 in 3 of the people you know are fat. Your folks, your siblings, your friends, your neighbours. When you take out all your insecurities and aggressions and failures on me, it doesn't achieve much
Coz I go home to a wonderful and caring husband, a family who love me, friends who have proven themselves time and time again. You can't take away my joy or my accomplishments. You can't get my medical licence revoked. You have no idea where I live. You can't touch me.

So there are a lot of interesting people on twitter claiming that my website doesn't contain any sources. I fear this person is not used to reading things on the Internet so might be a little confused. I therefore thought I'd help him and any others out. Consider this a PSA
As you navigate through the website you will find a number of drop down boxes. You need to click on them to expand. Here are some pictures to help. ImageImage
Once you expand the section you will see some words are highlighted in a different colour. If you click on these, they will take you straight to the source. For example: ImageImage

Diabetes: a history lesson

250BC: Appolonius coins the term diabetes which refers to a condition in which people pass more water than they can consume. We now know that this is because excess sugar in the urine leads to the classical symptoms of weight loss, excess thrist/urine
11th century: a Persian scientist named Avicenna and several others began to notice that the urine of diabetics was sweet to the taste (don't ask) hence the term Diabetes Mellitus (the latter means honey in Latin)
18th century: scientists recognise that some people die within a few weeks of the their diagnosis and others live a lot longer. It becomes apparent that there are 2 types of diabetes.
