If people ask me what’s challenging about being Autistic, they probably expect “I wish I were smart like other people 🥺” but what they’re really getting is an infodump about the Judge Rotenberg Center and #stoptheshock
“Isn’t it hard being Autistic? 😰”

Yes it is, I’m glad you brought that up. *rants about being the center of 10,000 health conspiracy theories 🙄

I don’t like being the token tragedy for snake oil salesmen. Your protein powder does not, in fact, “cure” Autism.
“Isn’t being Autistic SO HARD? ☹️”

Yes it is. *proceeds to explain how the #FreeBritney movement illuminated disability rights challenges to the public and what needs to happen now
⚠️ SA

“You’re Autistic? You must face so many challenges.”

Absolutely *infodumps about rates of victimization among Autistic women and the need for Autistic kids to be taught bodily autonomy so they’re not such easy targets.*

Some accommodations I’ve made for myself since finding out I’m Autistic that have improved my quality of life 🧵
Two disclaimers:

Yes, I’m professionally diagnosed. Personally I don’t care if someone is; self-diagnosis keeps people safe.

I know not all of these accommodations are options for everyone.
I wear noise-cancelling headphones. I use the brand @nuheara . They’re pricey, but worth it if that’s something you can budget for.

I will forget to put in my contacts some days, but I NEVER forget to put in my Nuheara buds. They make a big difference.

Why is it that if you do a project that’s not going to be used for anything, it’s VERY IMPORTANT if it’s a school project but A WASTE OF TIME if it’s something you choose to do voluntarily?
If someone with authority over you assigns a difficult task just for the sake of learning, how is that different from if you attempt a similar difficult task just for fun?

Try the new things. You’ll probably fail but that’s ok. Just imagine that it’s a “learning exercise” 🤷🏻‍♀️
Burnt cookies. Lopsided pottery. Sweaters missing a head hole. Bad fanfiction.

They’re all just the growing pains of a creative spirit.

I’m Autistic. Here’s organization hacks that have helped me 🧵
I have no idea if these will help other people. I don’t even know how much these have to do with Autism

All I know is that since I got diagnosed, I’ve gone from being a slob to an actually organized person, since I finally understand my brain! And I want to pass that on if I can
Hooks everywhere. Why put something in a drawer where you’ll forget about it and it will get tangled up, when you could hang it neatly on the wall?

Homeschooling is so wild because it could be because you’re disabled
or got bullied a lot
or training for the Olympics
or because your parents want to teach you that Lil Nas X is the literal anti-Christ.

It’s a real grab bag.
As someone who was homeschooled myself:

I firmly believe it should be an option.

I firmly believe not enough is done to protect these kids.
Like if little Tina is disabled and her school just isn’t doing the bare minimum to give her a half-decent education then I think it’s awesome for her mom to find a curriculum and teach her at home.

Movies I loved as a kid that I now realize mirrored my Autistic experience 🧵
🩰 Barbie Twelve Dancing Princesses was my favorite movie for a while. The movie shows an evil woman trying to erase the personality and individuality of 12 sisters through force because she wants power over them, but she says it’s to make them socially appropriate.
🩰 Barbie and her sisters survive through dancing, and in the end their unique talents, not their conformity, save their family and their country. Dancing was always a stim of choice for me, which (like it did with Barbie) helped me maintain hope during it all.
