I don’t just mean the moral imperative or even security, those couldn’t be more clear
I’m talking about the economic interests of the Free World.
Short Thread 🧵
In 2021, the global spending on defence reached $2113 billion, and that was before putin/russia introduced the MAD idea that the war of conquest (invading neighbors unprovoked/ with no just cause whatsoever) was OK again.
Then weak & pathetic putin/russia introduced nuclear blackmail into the global security discourse, violating a taboo at the basis of non-proliferation doctrine (if you can threaten a nuclear strike and get something in return - every country will want one) washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
If we imagine for a second a “brave new world” where the war of conquest is no longer unthinkable and nuclear blackmail is “on the table” for dictators & revanchist regimes alike, by what factor will the global defense spending have to grow?
Pretending that the world in which russia isn’t decisively defeated is no different from the one we’re living in now is LUNACY. The world in which Ukrainian borders aren’t fully restored is a world in which nobody’s borders are sacred.
International military aid to Ukraine has amounted to $20B, which sounds like a lot, but is a rounding error when compared with $2113B (the size of the global defense spending)
Ukrainians are defending their country from an invasion, but they’re fighting for all of us to have a chance of a prosperous future, where we don’t have to redirect all government budgets to defence and live in a constant fear of some other dictator discovering their inner-putin
If we quadruple the worldwide annual defense spending (as you suggesting) we’re facing a world where additional 6.5 TRILLION will be converted into more bombs, tanks, & rockets (combined GDP of 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇪🇸)
This is the world where we’re heading if russia isn’t decisively defeated
Russia is a fascist state, it is killing Ukrainians for being Ukrainian. When an occupying power “evacuates” civilians via filtration camps, this is known as genocide.
