You were good at your job. Maybe VERY good which is why you got promoted to being a manager. It sounded like a promotion so why doesn't it feel like one? Feeling burnt out? Read on...
Shifting from an IC or an intermediate developer into a manager is a leap. Not that you can't do it but it is 2 very different jobs requiring 2 very different skill sets.
Taking a stab at #buildinginpublic here with a public brainstorm with collaborator @3SimpleRules's Bruce Faulkner. We're building a 6 part mini pod to help people lower their panic levels from DEFCON 1 to at least a 3! Potential topics 👇
Potential Topic 1: Tired of hearing about the importance of building psychological safety and trust on a team and not feeling like it is working? What does it really mean and how do I do it?
Potential Topic 2: I am drowning with the workload and don't want to look like a lame-o. I would rather quit than complain. Exploring what is behind door #3.
Potential Topic 3: I want my team to like me AND I need to give some tough feedback to keep us on track. When I give "honest" feedback I am told I am too harsh. I don't have time to cater to everyone's needs. I want to give up.
Potential Topic 4: Riff on Pareto 80/20 Rule - one person on my team is taking up 80% of my energy. Is it worth it? It would be easier to do the work myself and pay them to sit there (but I know that is wrong 👿). What to do?
I realize that these are not exactly topics but it's a brainstorm 🤪
What were/are your biggest challenges as a new manager?
Disaster stories? The worse the better.
What resources/tips did you wish you had had?
Feedback and thoughts are much appreciated.
