The critically ill patient is at high risk of psychological distress - there is uncertainty, pain, a noisy environment. Functional limitations and physical illness can have detrimental effects on feelings of self-worth as well.

Psychological distress has a negative impact on the adherence to rehabilitation, and patients with distress are likely to have a prolonged length of stay and pain. #CCSSA2022

HCWs often coerce or bully patients to achieve improved patient function in those who are unwilling to cooperate. This seems easier, but definitely violates the principles of patient-centred care. #CCSSA2022

Instead try active listening, give verbal acknowledgement of patient distress, try to connect in a meaningful way, with patient goal-setting and education, as well as appropriately pacing rehab. #CCSSA2022
