Joshua 14: This chapter focuses on the distribution of the land that has been conquered. The character of Caleb that is introduced to us here was one of 12 spies sent out spy on Canaan. A sermon 🧵. #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
Caleb and Joshua were outnumbered by the 10 who didn’t trust that God would give them victory. God then declared that an entire generation will be wiped out for another 40 years and only those 20 years and below would enter the land. #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
Caleb and Joshua led them into Caanan and the tribe of Judah was the first to be allocated west of the Jordan (as the East had been allocated before). Caleb belonged to this tribe and 45 years earlier he had been promised this inheritance at Hebron. #Conquest @NairobiChapel
Caleb had “window-shopped” at the age of 45 when he went to spy Canaan! Unlike many of us who window shop and don’t return to claim what’s yours, Caleb came back for his promise and inheritance. #Conquest @NairobiChapel
Many Christians are guilty of spiritual window shopping but never come back for them and we never posses them. We live in a world of great competition and we are easily distracted by internal and external measures. #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
If you don’t receive a certain certification, come from a certain family, own certain possessions are some of the external sources of the competition we experience. Caleb had an ETERNAL standard - To please God. #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
With God’s standard, that is eternal, there is no competition. What is mine, is mine. What enabled an 85 year old man to return and take his inheritance? FOUR lessons we learn from Caleb’s life: #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
1. WORD - Verse 6. “You know what the Lord said”. Caleb’s claim over the land of promise was based on the word and the promises of God. As we clamor for different things in life, we need to remain guided and riveted to God’s word. #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
Faith is acting on what God has said and making what God has said the very basis. Taking God at His word. You cannot have what God has promised if you do not believe that God meant it. Caleb was convinced that God meant what He said. #Conquest @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
2.WALK - Verse 8 “….I followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly”. This phrase is mentioned 5 times about Caleb in the Old Testament. Similar to a hunter and a prey, the word “followed” refers to “closing the gap” like a hunter and its prey. @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
Caleb was committed to closing the gap between him and God. The word “wholeheartedly” is “to fill”. To be filled with as much of God as possible (like wind filling a sail) and propel him towards God’s destiny for his life. @NairobiChapel @NickKorir #Conquest
God had ALL of Caleb. Is your sail empty? If you please God, it doesn’t matter who you displease. If you displease God, it doesn’t matter who you please. Let God be the most consistent feature in every aspect of your life. @NairobiChapel @NickKorir #Conquest
3. WAIT - Verse 10 “…He has kept me alive for 45 years”. Caleb did not know when or how God would give him the promise but this didn’t determine his relationship with God. Caleb patiently waited on God’s timing for his inheritance. @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
Caleb didn’t allow his age to stop him from receiving God’s promise. You are never too old to accomplish God’s purposes. Michelangelo completed his greatest work at age of 87. The sooner you align to God’s purposes, the more fulfilling your life will be.@NairobiChapel @NickKorir
4. WANT - Verse 12 “…Now give me this hill country that God has promised me”. Hebron is where Abraham,Sarah, Rebekah, Isaac and Joseph are buried. A very special place.Hebron was hill country (3,000 ft above sea level) had giants & had fortified cities.@NairobiChapel @NickKorir
Hebron was one of the difficult places to inherit or take possession. Caleb already overcame the giant (of fear, worry, self pity) 45 years ago when they visited and spied. Time and factors had changed but Caleb’s God remained the same. @NairobiChapel @NickKorir #Conquest
Hebron means “fellowship” in Hebrew. He wanted to fellowship with God. His greatest want is to be with God. To please God. There is a huge difference between promise and possession. Are you hungry for God or for competition? Remain in God’s word. @NairobiChapel @NickKorir
