Micheal Martin is giving out about the Shinners suing for libel. It's "chilling", he says.
What ever must he think of this shower...
First up, FF TD and serial driving offender Barry Cowen who threatened the Sunday Times if it published details of his driving offences. They went ahead and published anyway. Baz has never sued them.
Next up, and related, we have Thomas Byrne who told local radio in Louth he was "consulting with my solicitors" about claims made by party activist Ken McFadden, about leaking Barry Cowen's transgressions. Thomas never sued on this occasion. But he has previously sued Google.
And we had a near decade long libel battle by FF presidential candidate Sean Gallagher against RTE after RTE's election debate where false claims were read out. It's believed Sean got around €130,000 from RTE in the end.
And Frank Fahey, a junior FF minister who is believed to have received around €150,000 from the Mail, and an undisclosed amount from the Independent.
And we can only delight in the hubris of FF TD Beverley Flynn who was hit with a €1.25m legal bill when she failed in her libel action against RTE. She was still paying it off a decade later!
And isn't it only a couple of months ago that FF junior minister Robert Troy issued a legal threat demanding resolution within 24 hrs. Seems at this remove that Robert was trying to conceal his shady property dealings.
And not sure what happened this case, but ex-FF TD Frank O'Rourke blamed posts on Twitter and Facebook for his loss of his seat in #ge2020. The case appears to have petered out.
And while ex-FF minister Pat Carey is suing the publisher of the Independent about stories of child abuse, he is suing for privacy and breach of confidentiality and not specifically, defamation.
And although a FF councillor these days, Colm Keaveney was a FF TD in 2015/16 when he issued several defamation claims against the publisher of the Independent. Is one of these cases still ongoing?
And when RTE Investigates conducted an undercover sting which exposed sleaze, if not downright corruption, by local councillors in planning matters, it was FF's Joe Queenan who threated to sue RTE for libel. He never did.
Thanks to @saoirse161616 below for reminding us of FF minister [until 2010] Martin Cullen who sued RTE Liveline and the publishers of the Sindo and publishers of The S*n for false allegations of adultery. The RTE case was settled in 2009. No word on damages though.
Martin Cullen didn't sue the Indo about this altogether separate shaggy dog story, but there's a fair chance he received compo anyways. It's an hilarious apology though.
The most senior FF politician to sue for defamation was Albert Reynolds who was awarded 1 shiny new penny in compo, and he had to foot around €500,000 for his own legal costs in an action against the Sunday Times.

Tue, we learned Simon Coveney's Irish Aid gave €540,000 in 2021 to the "charity" founded & chaired by Denis O'Brien to protect journalists [part of €4m overall given by govt to the charity]
Today we learn journalist Sam Smyth has received a "large 6-figure sum" in compo for 1/2
2/2 compo for the illegal hacking of his records while he worked at Ireland's biggest press group. The hacking was paid for by Denis O'Brien.
Sam Smyth had covered a Tribunal which concluded Denis O'Brien gave a FG minister €1m when the minister was selling a mobile licence.
No word on how much Brendan O'Connor, whose records were also hacked, was paid. Doubt he'll be covering it on his weekend RTE show!
What about journalist Maeve Sheehan whose records were also illegally hacked?
How come Robert Troy left his name off ALL the planning applications relating to 25a Rathdown Road in Dublin, with all the applications in the name of his 50% partner John Noel McGivney?
Troy doesn't like any publicity at all, does he?
Does FF still regard itself as a "bit to the Left" because the application to Dublin City Council for a social housing exemption cert at the 25a Rathdown Road development strongly suggests Robert Troy has other leanings!
25a Rathdown is Robert Troy's most successful property deal. Bought for €545,000 in 2015, he fought against the odds to get planning permission for two 3-bed houses in "the garden". The "garden" was sold, with market sources suggesting it was worth €300k.
This is Robert Troy property which the Land Registry calls
26 Ash Lawns, Clonbalt Wood, Longford
Troy calls it
26 Ashelawns, Conbalt Woods, Longford
[the only bits that match are '26' and 'Longford']
Troy doubled his money in 100 days with Council.
Robert Troy claims he didn't know he had to register a property if he didn't own it on 31 December of the declaration year. But you can see why there would be intense interest with this property. Coincidence that Troy "didn't know"
This property was bought from a FF councillor, and in 100 days was flipped to Longford County Council for 2x original price, plus Longford County Council claim their €163k was below market value. And Troy claims he "didn't know" he had to declare it?
What ever happened to Robert Troy property at Dublin Bridge in Mullingar? It appeared in his 2019 register, but not 2018, and not 2020 [and he hasn't mentioned it as an omission]. It's odd because there's only one planning application for flats conversion & it was refused in 2016
Robert Troy was involved in a project to sell four apartments at 2 Austin Friars Street to the council for €1m, but that fell through. Presumably that's different to the Dublin Bridge project?
Was Robert Troy involved in two projects, one in 2019 and one in 2020 to sell apartments to Westmeath County Council, one project at Dublin Bridge and one on Austin Friars St? In both case, Troy has "business partners", Colin Dolan [Joe's son] in the latter, unknown in the former
Mail indicates the male politician against whom allegations of sexualised communication to minors, have been made, is a backbench TD and is a member of an Oireachtas committee. It's alleged he attempted to groom several male minors.
He was suspended from the party in May 2022.
He's been suspended by the unidentified party for 3.5 months now, read into that what you will. However, he hasn't been removed from the Oireachtas committee where he has served on behalf of the party.
There been no re-designation as independent or non-party in the past three months. Mind you, Neasa Hourigan and Patrick Costello are still designated as 'Green' on committees even though they're suspended from the Green party for defying the whip.
SF MLA Gerry Kelly, right below, accused of initiating libel proceedings in N Ireland which "share several characteristics with strategic lawsuits against public participation [SLAPP]"
Gerry is suing Malachi O'Doherty after a radio broadcast, and Ruth Dudley Edwards for print.
Accusation comes from UK-based Index on Censorship which previously criticised Mary Lou McDonald's libel action against RTE.
Gerry Kelly is suing about comments made about his great escape from the Maze prison in 1983.
