NEW: China has recruited dozens of former British military pilots to teach the Chinese armed forces how to defeat western warplanes & helicopters in a “threat to UK interests”, officials have revealed.

1/
One official said some 30 pilots - many ex-fast jet but also some helicopter pilots lured by annual salaries of around £240,000 - are currently in China training pilots in the People’s Liberation Army in what a defence analyst described as a stunning breach of security.
2/
A retired senior @RoyalAirForce officer said: “Wow… that is appalling. What were they thinking?”

3/
Beijing is actively trying to hire many more serving and former military pilots and other specialists from across the RAF, the @RoyalNavy and the @BritishArmy as well as personnel from other western nations, the western official said.

4/
The situation is so grave, the UK
@DefenceHQ’s Defence Intelligence service on Tuesday issued a “threat alert” to warn against such approaches.

5/
China is using third-party head-hunters, including a company based in South Africa, to target personnel, the western official said.

6/
The western official said the recruitment schemes posed “a threat to UK and western interests” and were viewed with “concern and disapproval” by the government.

7/
All British former service personnel who have accepted jobs to train Chinese military pilots “are almost certainly enhancing China's military knowledge and capability,” the official said.

8/
Despite the potential for harm to national security, the UK appears to have been powerless to stop the recruitment schemes or to force the former service personnel who have accepted jobs in China to return home - beyond appealing to their sense of honour and patriotism.

9/
The official said it was not thought that anyone had breached the Official Secrets Act – which would be a criminal offence. The Ministry of Defence said it was working to make it much harder for China to poach British military talent.

10/
The spike in recruitment has been identified since around the end of 2019 at the start of the COVID lockdown. Officials were unable to say immediately what the total number was of former British military personnel who had ever been hired to work for the Chinese.

11/
China is seeking pilots with experience of flying British & other NATO warplanes, including the Typhoon & Tornado fighter jets and the Harrier jump jet – which used to operate off UK carriers, to teach its pilots how best to counter their capabilities, the official said.

12/
“It's not training Chinese pilots on Western jets. It's taking Western pilots of great experience to help develop Chinese military air force tactics and capabilities,” the official said.

13/
“It's really the Chinese having an understanding of what the latest generation of tactics and approaches and capabilities would be were the Chinese military to get into situations coming up against those types of assets.”

Another @trussliz minister demonstrates they don't appreciate the importance of UK/NATO security -underpinned by credible military - to ensure economic stability. @griffitha refuses to guarantee rise in defence spending, while in almost same breath noting there's a war in Europe!
Asked by @SophyRidgeSky if he could commit to an increase in defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2030, Treasury minister @griffitha said: "Everything is in scope. There are no commitments, I'm afraid, that I can make at 9am on a Sunday morning because we are going into a process."
The minister was then asked about talk of replacing @trussliz. He thought this was a bad idea as now was time for unity. He used Russia's war in Ukraine as part of his justification - but missed out how this war is a fundamental reason not to mess around with funding for defence

NEW: Chancellor @Jeremy_Hunt opens up the possibility of @trussliz ditching a pledge to increase defence spending to 3% of national income by 2030. It’s unclear how @BWallaceMP would want to stay on as Defence Secretary if military funding doesn’t grow as much as promised.🧵
The new Chancellor also makes the flawed assessment that long-term defence spending can only be secured if there is economic stability. Of course that is true. But he is missing the more fundamental point: there can be no economic stability without security.
2/
The crippling energy price rise – as @trussliz keeps saying – is caused by Vladimir Putin using energy as a weapon, reducing the flow of Russian oil & gas to pressure Western nations to stop their crucial support to Ukraine, which has helped thwart his invasion so far.

Russia is running out of weapons to wage its war in Ukraine, a UK spy chief says. But - given hollowed out stockpiles/defence cuts - what about the UK & European #NATO allies?
I asked 🇬🇧 @BWallaceMP if there was a risk western weapons would run out before Russia's. He said no

1/
Here is the full reply from the UK Defence Secretary, speaking as he entered @NATO HQ for a defence ministerial:
"There isn’t a risk because unlike Russia, who has already isolated itself and we saw that yesterday at the United Nations vote, they need a supply chain.

2/
"Large parts of the supply chain were not in Russia. They came from all over the world, including in Europe, including indeed even in Ukraine, some of their supply chain was in Ukraine.

NEW: Sir Jeremy Fleming, Director of UK spy agency @GCHQ, will use a rare, public speech on Tuesday to warn that China is seeking to exploit technologies in space and online in ways that could pose a “huge threat to us all”.
1/
Sir Jeremy will flag concerns about the potential for Beijing to target the satellites of opponents at a time of conflict, crippling a crucial domain relied upon by militaries to launch weapons and communicate. It is feared the technology could also be used to track people.
2/
The @GCHQ chief will also say the Chinese Communist Party is “learning the lessons” from Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has seen the UK and its allies hit the Russian economy with sanctions.

EXCLUSIVE: The @RoyalAirForce has for the first time admitted “mistakes were made” with its recruitment practices following a slew of allegations that the service prioritised ethnic minority and female candidates over white men to hit “impossible” diversity targets.

1/
In the latest revelation - reported 1st by @timdavies_uk -a leaked emailed exposed concern about how an IT system that ranks candidates on merit would be “problematic” for the RAF and have “huge implications” on how the air force hits its ethnic minority and female targets.

2/
The internal email, dated 9 April 2021, also claimed the top recruitment priority for Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston, @ChiefofAirStaff, was ethnic minorities and women.
