Must-read piece on how @AIPAC and @DemMaj4Israel are throwing all they can at progressives – either to defeat them, or to scare them into abandoning their progressive values when it comes to Palestinian rights.🧵
AIPAC still claims to represent the mainstream Jewish community, but their actions are strikingly out of touch with the majority of American Jews’ values.
AIPAC endorsed 109 Republicans who backed Jan 6th.
They spent millions to oust former synagogue president @RepAndyLevin.
AIPAC is a special interest group willing to abandon everyday people in pursuit of their policy agenda — which is a cynical and racist vision of Jewish safety. One that insists we’ll only be safe with endless apartheid, higher walls, and bigger weapons.
You don’t have to breathe a word about opposing apartheid, or holding Israel accountable, to become the subject of AIPAC and DMFI's attack ads.
Fighting for justice at home - and suggesting, occasionally, that Palestinians deserve justice too - is enough to make you a target⬇️
As @ryangrim writes, "While DMFI is ostensibly organized around the politics of Israel, in practice, it has become a weapon wielded by the party’s centrist faction against its progressive wing."
We need to #DropAIPAC, and make it clear that @DemMaj4Israel has no place in the Democratic Party.
It’s the only path forward for a progressive movement that can win a thriving future for all of us.
WATCH: Rep @HaleyLive literally turns her back and walks away from a young Jewish mother who politely asks why Stevens takes @AIPAC funding when AIPAC supports insurrectionists.
Just last week, AIPAC's super PAC UDP used far-right ad firm @OnMessageInc to buy ads for Stevens 🧵
Stevens has already received >1 million from AIPAC, including UDP ad buys with @OnMessageInc.
OnMessage runs ads for insurrectionists like Josh Hawley, Ron Johnson, + Rick Scott.
Stevens know she's in the wrong — so she refuses to answer the question.
BREAKING: Israeli army caught using Blue Wolf surveillance system to track and deport human rights activists in the West Bank.
“Anybody who took a picture, send it to me on WhatsApp,” the commander ordered. “The photos have to be downloaded.” haaretz.com/israel-news/.p…
There is extensive documentation of Blue Wolf being used to surveil Palestinians, but this is one of the first instances where the IDF is openly admitting to using the system on human rights observers.
“Is she in the database?” One of the commanders ordered a soldier carrying a digital camera to photograph the women.
“Where is the Blue Wolf?” one of the soldiers asked another.
Leading social media companies systemically took down Palestinian documentation of human rights abuses while leaving up genocidal language in Hebrew directed at Palestinians and Arabs.
“Social media companies’ swift steps to protect Ukrainians’ free speech, especially in a time of war, was shocking to many Palestinians…these platforms actively participated in a campaign of online repression last May that systematically targeted and censored Palestinian voices”
Palestinian digital rights organization @7amleh “documented more than 500 cases of digital rights violations between May 6 and May 19, 2021; 85 percent of those cases took place on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms (the number of actual violations is likely much higher).”
“First, an institutionalized regime of systematic racial oppression and discrimination has been established. Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs in East Jerusalem and the West Bank live their lives under a single regime” designed to promote Jewish supremacy over Palestinians.
“Second, this system of alien rule has been established with the intent to maintain the domination of one racial-national-ethnic group over another. …
Under this system, the freedoms of one group are inextricably bound up in the subjugation of the other.”
This is a worthy event for people to learn more about the crisis unfolding in Israel/Palestine.
But we want to take time to talk to the progressive Jewish institutions — @URJorg and @NCJW — who are cosponsoring it despite not saying anything condemning Israeli actions this week.
This is a moment for progressive Jewish leaders to grapple with the ways that they have enabled Israeli policies of displacement and oppression for decades.
And this is a moment to take action to make sure these Israeli policies come to an end.
Israel's commitment to Jewish supremacy is causing Palestinian families to lose their homes. It is causing Palestinian Muslim worshipers to be attacked on one of their holiest days.
American Jewish institutions must use the power they have to speak out and shift the status quo.
We deleted a tweet that unintentionally amplified calls for violence against civilians. We shudder thinking of bombs falling on our loved ones in Tel Aviv.
To propagandists amplifying the error: stop your malicious attempts to distract from ongoing Israeli state violence.
We remain unapologetic in our solidarity with Palestinians facing state violence while struggling for their homes and their rights — this week & long before.
Anyone with any decency should be in support of an occupied people fighting for freedom, especially in moments like this.
Let’s be clear: attempts to cast Palestinians as exceptionally violent & hateful are racist.
They aim to distract us from the incredible violence being unleashed right now on Palestinian people and the hatred spewed at them by Jewish Israelis — in the streets and in Knesset.
