BREAKING: Metro says the Silver Line to Dulles Airport and Loudoun County is ready to open in time for the Thanksgiving travel rush - BUT…..there aren’t enough trains because of those sidelined 7000 series railcars #wmata@nbcwashington
Metro has not been permitted to return its full fleet of troubled 7000 series railcars back on the tracks. The agency says opening 11 more miles of track with the existing number of trains in use would increase wait times, increase crowding and could lead to dangerous conditions
Metro is asking its top safety watchdog, the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission, for permission to return its entire fleet of 7000 series railcars. But there are disagreements over data and measurements. Over a year ago, a 7000 series train derailed because of wheel issues.
There is more than a disagreement over whether or not the 7000 series trains are ready to go - the @MetrorailSafety says: “It is concerning to the WMSC that Metrorail may not be interested in carrying out its safety responsibilities.…
….The WMSC is deeply concerned about Metrorail senior leadership’s incorrect statements that a failure to follow procedures in place to control known hazards such a wheel migration does not lead to unsafe conditions #wmata
NEW:Metro’s safety training drill is turning up some issues with the rail along the second phase of the Silver Line. The rails have been sitting for so long, that many are rusted - meaning some safety equipment is having a hard time “connecting” to the rails #wmata@nbcwashington
Experts here say the rust wouldn’t be an issue if trains were running a normal schedule. But this speaks to the delay of the project (4 years and counting) and how the tracks and third rail sitting exposed to the elements could cause issues. #wmata@nbcwashington
This training drill was expected to start around 8am - and it hasn’t been able to start yet because the proper safety devices aren’t able to be installed quickly #wmata
